My HP Photosmart 5524 app is Intel based. I have recently had this repeating message from Apple telling me that   it will not work with future releases of MacOS. Apparently I need an update to silicon or universal version. I have no idea how to do that!

Hi @organicbob,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP Photosmart 5524 Printer is getting an error: Support Ending for Intel-Based Apps.

Follow these steps to safely remove the message and keep your printer working:

Step 1: Remove the Legacy HP Software:

  1. Open the Finder and click on Applications.

  2. Look for any HP folders (such as HP, Hewlett-Packard, or HP Smart).

  3. Drag these folders to the Trash and empty the trash.

Step 2: Set up your Printer with macOS Built-in Drivers:

Because older HP printers do not have Apple Silicon-compatible apps, macOS handles the printing via Apple's native AirPrint.

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older Macs).

  2. Scroll down and click on Printers & Scanners.

  3. If your HP Photosmart 5524 is listed, select it and click Remove Printer or - to delete it.

  4. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax or the + button.

  5. Select your Photosmart 5524 from the list.

  6. In the Use or Print Using drop-down menu, choose AirPrint or Secure AirPrint. (Do not select the older "HP" driver option).

  7. Click Add.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I have now changed the printer settings to work on Airprint but what about if I want to scan a document?

Thank you for your response.

Since you’ve switched your printer to AirPrint, scanning works a little differently than printing. AirPrint itself is mainly designed for printing, but Apple also supports AirScan (also called eSCL), which lets you scan documents if your printer supports it.

Here’s how you can check and use scanning:

How to Scan with AirPrint-Compatible Devices:

Check AirScan support: Not all AirPrint printers support scanning. Look up your printer model on the manufacturer’s site to confirm.

Use Preview or Image Capture: On a Mac, open the Preview app or Image Capture. If your printer supports AirScan, it should appear as a scanner option.

Use iPhone/iPad scanning: In iOS, you can scan directly from the Files app or Notes app if the printer supports AirScan.

Fallback via USB: If wireless scanning isn’t supported, connecting the printer via USB and using Image Capture or the HP’s full-feature driver may be necessary. Official HP® Support.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
