HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 All-in-One Printer

I recently switched to a Windows 11 computer.  My computer can see the printer and scanner.  However, HP Smart cannot.  When i try to open the printer queue, it brings up some kind of web app that says Scan to Computer is not activated.  Help!  I am on a deadline, don't have support anymore and need to scan time sensitive docs.

Hi @tamimd67,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand you're under a deadline and are having trouble scanning with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 after switching to a Windows 11 PC. I’ll walk you through the quickest steps to get you scanning right away.

Step 1: Bypass HP Smart – Use Windows’ Built-In Scan Tool

Since HP Smart isn’t detecting your scanner, let’s use Windows’ built-in scanning tool to keep you moving:

  1. Press the Windows key, type “Windows Scan”, and open the Scan app.
  2. Select your printer from the scanner list.
  3. Choose file type (PDF or JPEG) and scan destination.
  4. Click Scan.

This tool does not rely on HP Smart and usually works immediately once Windows recognizes the scanner.

Step 2: Enable "Scan to Computer" (if needed)

If you're seeing “Scan to Computer is not activated” via the web interface:

  1. Open a browser and go to your printer’s IP address (check the printer’s display: Settings > Network Settings > Wi-Fi Details).
  2. Log in (if asked, the default password may be the printer’s PIN, found on a sticker inside the printer).
  3. Go to Scan > Scan to Computer or similar setting.
  4. Enable or activate it.

Then, retry scanning from HP Smart or the front panel of the printer.

Step 3: (Optional but Recommended) Reinstall HP Smart Correctly

If you have time:

  1. Uninstall HP Smart completely.
  2. Download the latest HP Smart from the HP Smart - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store.
  3. Reinstall and reconnect the printer via Wi-Fi or USB.

HP Smart should now detect the scanner after a fresh install, especially with the latest Windows 11 compatibility updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
