Today Officejet 8500 no longer recognized Tray 2. Decided to uninstall completely and reinstall latest version. Now it won't even install the full set of drivers. It only installs very basic printing drivers. No scan. No Fax. No choice of features.
HP diagnostics keeps seeing my system as Windows 8 or 8.1, but it is definitely Windows 10, 64 bit.

Hi
Thanks for using the HP Support Community.
Can you try this:
* *Note that if there are other printers installed, these will need to be reinstalled after this.
Step 1. Uninstall the HP Software from your PC.
Please follow the steps provided to uninstall the printer software in the link: Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02259020
Also, please follow the steps provided below to completely remove the printer software from printer properties.
Steps to remove printer driver files from Print Server Properties:
Step 2. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing one of the following:
• Click the Start menu and in the search field type 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click it in the search list.
• Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.
• From the Start menu or the Start screen:
• Open Devices and Printers.
• Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window.
• Click on the Drivers tab.
Step 3. Backup your registry before making any registry changes, the following resource will show you how:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03485724
Step 4. Update the registry using the Reg file below
Note: this will change some printer related policies for your PC):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/avbv56zdgwv7600/kernel.reg?dl=1
Step 5. Right click the Start menu and select Run.
Type Services.msc and press OK.
Locate and stop the Print Spooler service
Step 6. Browse to c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers.
Rename W32X86 to W32x86.old
Rename x64 to x64.old
Note: if any of these folders fail to rename reboot your PC and then Continue following the steps starting from Step 5.
Step 7. Restart PC.
Step 8. Finally, reinstall the HP Software.
Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your efforts, Greenturtle, but I still get the "Fatal Error during installation" about 10 minutes after it starts "configuration of printer". I tried stopping all items in startup (except for Windows Defender)....no joy. I am curious about the fact that in msconfig Config., it shows my system as Windows 8 Default, and also lists Windows 7, and the fatal install error shows Windows 2008. I have not used either for years, having upgraded to Windows 10 when it first became available several years ago. I started having an HP "Imaging device not found" for the HP 8500 but was able to work around it. But now, it won't install any drivers except the BASIC printer drivers. Does not allow me to do ANY features. When it does a diagnostic (after the failed installation) I looked at the Extended Error info and it showed this eeeor: 8,[(1, 0, -2147221164)]. I even tried switching from LAN cable to USB cable with the same result. I think I have tried everything I can think of, including all the suggestions you made. I greatly appreciate your efforts. HI,
Can you check the following resource;
HP Officejet Pro 7740/8740 Configure Print Settings for Tray 2 and Duplex Printing
New er printer but the steps to enable tray 2 is the same.
Also, check out this standalone software for your scanning:
HP Scan Extended
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"
Hope that helps!

Unfortunately I get the message "HP Imaging Device not found", which ALWAYS what has come up in the last year so even the HPScan exe will not work. For some reason, all of a sudden it DOES allow me to address Tray 1 or 2.
It seems now the only problem (for the moment) I have is getting the Imaging Device to install.
Once again, thanks so much for your efforts. Dale

Hi,
Not sure if the printer supports Webscan. Can you try Webscan? These resources show you how:
Scanning Multiple pages from Chromebook
(Webscan is universal, so don;t worry that you see Chromebook)
Hope that helps!

After I reinstalled Win 10, and it is working properly now, I decided to yet again remove and install the HP software. This time it went all the way through, although it still says "No imaging device found". However, I am now able to view most things in "HP Solution Center" again, AND the HP Scan now works, so I am able to work around the imaging device not being found.
Thanks again for all your efforts. Dale
