Somehow my printer is locked into a weird mode. The normal UI and function of the buttons and LCD screen are gone and replaced by a screen constantly saying things like "TEST. OPEN DOOR SENSOR"
Out of ideas I went ahead and opened the ink cartridge door. It liked that, and responded with another request. It asked me to press the power button. I did that (does not turn the printer off FYI), then it wanted me to press speed dial button. At this point it became clear that I am function testing all the buttons and sensors. Problem is I have no desire to do this, and I'm not sure exactly how we got here, but I was entering all kinds of codes into the keypad last week to get some diagnostic pages printed. I think something happened and it is now stuck in diagnostic purgatory. HELP ME!
I did a whole bunch of resets already, including a level 9 scary one. But the stupid message is still there. It will print sometimes, other times it thinks the ink cartridges are fake (whisper "THEY ARE!"). I managed to get the message to disappear from the screen earlier today but I was button mashing and the change did not last.

I found the following Q&A SOLVED: The Officejet is stuck on SelfTest and stopped - Fixya.
This is exactly my scenario of being locked in diagnostic mode.
Since ink cartridges are frequent causes for faults and errors, I opened the cartridge door, the cartridges parked over to the right and I removed both. I power cycled via the power cord. I was greeted with the same power-on message "0 TEST OPEN DOOR SENSOR". I opened the door, then closed it, the printer showed "0 ON <SPEEDDIAL>". I pressed the ON button, then SPEEDDIAL button the printer began leading me across the entire keyboard. After each button is pressed the display updates telling you which button to press next. See OP for a picture of the button order. Once you reach the final key, which is one of the copy buttons, press it multiple times. Thats the key bit that took a lot of trial and error to figure out. That finally released my printer from test mode jail and the printer booted normally and the UI was back to normal. I installed the previous cartridges and an alignment page printed, was scanned and I'm back in business. Printer prints and scans normally now.

@Trunkmonkey007, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
It seems like the printer is stuck on the error screen. A factory reset will not work in this case. For a factory reset to work, you will have to access the home screen of the printer bypassing the error.
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
If this does not help, unplug the power cable and hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds and release it. Power on the printer and check.
If the issue persists, as the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Hello Kumar,
I'm sorry for not replying sooner and thank you for the information and suggestions.
In the picture I attached previously, do you recognize what is displayed on the printer screen? Is this a known mode for this printer and if so there has to be a way to exit it. This all started after I was attempting to diagnose missing colors in my printing, and I found a post that gave me some codes to enter into the keypad on the front of the Officejet 5610. As I recall the codes were a series of 3 or 4 numbers, followed by pressing 2 buttons at the same time. (I think the 2 buttons were * and #). It was after entering several of these codes and restarting the printer that I first saw this test mode come up.
A couple times I have been able to exit this test mode, but only by accident. But it comes back on the next power up. The way I was able to exit the test mode was to follow the prompts on the screen and press every button on the printer in the order they are presented on the screen. Here's a picture of the route it takes you, starting on the left with the power button.
After doing this I then started mashing buttons and somehow escaped the test mode. The normal display came on and I used the printer as normal for a few days. But then when I turned it off and later back on again, the test mode was back. I have not been able to replicate my escape from test mode since.
No matter how I have tried to reset the printer, including all of your suggestions, it still boots up to this TEST screen. It responds to nothing, except pressing all the keys in order. See how it says "ON" and "Speed Dial" on the screen? Those are the first two button on the printer starting at the left.
If I push those keys it prompts you for the next key in the sequential order. Very strange.
Can anyone get me out of this test mode please?

Unfortunately, there is no info on the error. However, there are no other steps to be performed that can resolve this issue.
You may reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance or upgrade the printer.
You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
