HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Ever since upgrading my Mac to Big Sur, my 6970 performance has been inconsistent. The printer's firmware is version MCP2CN2151AR. The biggest issue is scanning. I can no longer use the panel on the printer to initiate a scan. If I select that I want to scan to my computer it eventually comes back with "the selected computer is not available". And getting the scanner to work from the Mac's scanner interface is dodgy. The only way I can get that to work sometimes is if I turn off the printer then turn it on again.

When I try to use HP Easy Start and I select my printer it says there is updated software available, however when I continue from there, Easy Start goes into a suspended state for a long time then eventually comes back saying it can't connect to the internet.

If I try to use HP Easy Scan it gives me error "The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.imagecapture error 4294967249.)

I can use HP Easy Smart to initiate a scan but the user interface is terrible.

Hi,

Please follow below version of HP Easy Start, as soon as it launches open the top HP Easy Start menu and select Uninstall HP Software.

Follow the steps on screen and then click on Set Up New Device and follow the steps to reinstall the printer and check if you may see any difference then:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/HP_Easy_Start.app.zip

As soon as HP Easy start prompts to install HP Smart, close HP Easy Start and press the Skip to Software Download button, then follow the steps on screen to complete the installation and check for any difference.

I did Uninstall HP Software from the HP Easy Start menu, but I still had HP Smart and HP Easy Scan listed in my Applications folder of Finder. I deleted those manually. My printer was also still listed in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners so I manually removed it. Then I did Set Up New Device and Skip to Software Download and it loaded HP Easy Scan. I don't know if it was supposed to install HP Smart but I don't see that in my Applications.

I still cannot use Scan > To Computer from the printer's front panel. And if I try scanning using HP Easy Scan I get "The operation couldn't be completed."

I can scan using the System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Scan functionality.
