I have the exact same problem. Update auto installed, Printer (HP Pagewide Pro 477) freezes. It seems to work for a few seconds after power cycle (I have to unplug it. Even the power button does not work after this update.) What did HP do this time?

No idea what's going on, but this is not the best firmware update ever. Follow the steps Matthew wrote to create a USB drive. Unplug the power supply from the printer. Insert the USB drive and the power back in while pressing the power button (about 5 sec). You will see a blue screen with white text appear. At the bottom right, you can then click on "menu" to go to "Flash drive." Once the firmware update of the stick is done, you will see that the printer works better than ever.

Looks like the issue was that my drive was >32GB. FAT32 does not support drives larger that 32GB. Fixed it and update worked as expected this time.
Make sure to partition your drive in 32GB partitions, each formatted with FAT32, or use a small enough thumb drive.
On a more relevant note: What a **bleep**ty company HP is. Test your **bleep**ing updates before pushing them globally to all your paying customers. Honestly it would not be a stretch to believe that this is just a ploy to get people to buy a new printer. Also the lack of HP support on this thread is absolutely shameful. HP, you are a disgrace. Go **bleep** yourselves.

Perfect description. But would add that in my work environment turning off wifi was a no go, so the printer auto connected to wifi once active & the latest software was downloaded automatically, all with no problems. I have 7 of these printers, 4 were affected, all are working fine now.
Great help, thank you.

Received this from HP about 20 mins ago.
Kindly follow the below instruction to resolve the issue
please find the link below to download the firmware file on USB thumb drive.
The firmware is available under the folders:
HP Pagewide 477
1. Download the FW file(Ful2) format in a blank USB thumbdrive (FAT32)
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jsirrokfayx7lp83ap3cc/PW377dw_PW477dw_001.2208A.ful2?rlkey=6lzz42k2bw...
Once the file is downloaded follow the below steps :
2. Enter Pre-boot
1. Press and hold the power button and then connect the power cable
2. The display will go blank with all the soft keys lit up
3. Press Home > Back > Home > Home
3. Once we see the blue screen with menu options, select "Menu
4. Scroll to find "Drive Reflash" and select
5. Restart the printer after 3 minutes with the USB thumbdrive(Firmware loaded in it) connected and then once the printer on ready state check if its working
