Update!! I found a solution that works for the 577dw which should work for 477 as well!!!! I followed the directions above (thank you Matthew for those!!!) for doing the reflash, but when that didn't solve the problem for me as it still froze when I plugged in the ethernet, I did the same thing again to get to that menu and instead of choosing reflash, I chose the complete factory reset in that same menu area. That worked! It had to go through set up again and re-initialize. So far, I'm hooked to my ethernet, and it's been a few minutes now and hasn't frozen. I disabled any auto update so hopefully it will stay running. I haven't tried wifi yet but so far so good on ethernet. It's been an hour now and I'm still running WITH ethernet plugged in! YAY!

So i go into the hidden menu to select reflash and not the option at the first screen which display 12345 when we select it. With a correct usb key (a small one without multiple partition) it successfully read and download the firmware the start to reinstall the firmware. After the end of countdown, printer reboot and now seems to running fine. Don't had to full reset the printer so i don't loose my setup.
Printer is available from web ui management. I disable auto refresh and then search for a new firmware and no firmware seem to be available.
Here is the current setup with the firmware download from hp support
Firmware Version | MAVEDWPP1N001.2313A.00 |
Built Date | 2023-03-31 |
Thanks for your help guys. this printer remain the best printer I have and now I know there is a lot of users that can help in case of issues.
Hope HP will say something on this topic

If the device starts without lan attached, then you do not need to go into the secret menu, you can let the device boot to normal screen and then go to the usb icon and it will show an option to firmware update from there.

I tried Ksonntag13 work around and did a complete factory reset.
After the installation is complete, all is fine. Disable wifi and auto update...all is fine.
Plug in Ethernet...everything is still fine !! 🙂
Try to install the printer on my computer (software is install, but did not find any printer so could not complete), choose printer connected on ethernet........it finds it ! Installation run smoothly.
In the installation windows there a 1.....2.....3.....
Everything was find till the fourth dot after 2: connection lost, printer frozen.
The computer software was Full_Webpack-38.9.2003_1-PW477_Full_Webpack downloaded yesterday. I've check my download files and i still have the 38.9.1948_1 from september 2021. I will desinstall everything on my computer, factory reset on the printer and then try the 2021 version....should work i presume 🙂
I will keep you informed :)))

Thank you very much, Matthew. It worked for my HP PageWide 377 dw. After the reflash from USDb drive I did the reinitialisation that took about 5 minutes. After a restart of the printer I connected it to Ethernet and its working now.
Kind regards
Reto

Ok i tried with old drivers...same thing, during installation process on my computer the printer froze (betwenn step 2 and 3). I think may be the HP software looks for update when installing, so i will try with my internet disconnected.
Will keep you informed.

Well if i disconnect my internet i have no ethernet network, not a good thing to install a network printer.
I tried to block internet access to HP software during printer installation with kaspersky but it did not work as i hoped.
Despite the fact that the printer is now working with ehternet cable on, as soon as i try to install it on my computer (even with old driver from 2021), the printer freeze.
The good thing is that as it has not been correctly installed on my computer, if i restart the printer (it's froze so i restart it by unplugging of course) it is not frozen, even with ethernet on.....but i cannot install it on my computer.
I can just use it with usb key which is a pity 😞
Done for today, if i have new ideas i will try tomorrow and keep you posted 🙂
Have a nice day everyone.

It seems to be a bug on last update from HP... thousands of users loosing their time trying to make their printers work again...
And WHERE IS HP SUPPORT? How much time are we loosing? How much money does it cost for us loosing our time?
how long will it take for HP to provide clear instructions and the necessary support to fix this?
Annoying situation. Bad HP Support.
