This is an ongoing problem with HP and has happened to me over the last 2-3 macOS upgrades.  This is not an Apple issue but one from HP.  Since Apple releases their Beta software months before the public release you would think HP would test their printers with the up con coming macOS versions.  They do not.  I too like moving to the latest OS' for the newer features but have found you cannot do this with HP.  If I wasn't so invested in HP products at my offices and home I would move to another printer manufacturer.  It took HP several months to release drivers for the previous macOS version.  Hopefully they will not take that long.

I wasn't so lucky.  I'm running a HP Color Enterprise LaserJet M751. The software loads but doesn't print.  I even loaded the M750 which was the previous printer and it wouldn't print either.  Looks like I'll stop upgrading the software for 3-4 months until HP gets their act together.

Can someone tell me what LaserJet they were using that worked?

I am using an old Laserjet 1020 and it worked.

Sounds like low-key planned obsolescence so people will buy a new printer 😞

I have my HP printer (officejet 7740) networked.  After a bit of searching I and (randomly clicking???) I got my printer to work.

background: I noticed that after removing the printer because I had a large ? in the dock instead of the printer after upgrading to 14.1 (from 13.x) I could select the printer but not a driver.

possible requirement: HP printer capable of airprint , bonjour on (assumed is that you have bonjour on already since the printer worked before)

These are the steps I took

1) on macos: remove printer
2) on the HP printer:  (via the internal webserver), change network | general | network protocols to ipv4 only
3) on macos:  Add printer -> install ip printer (the basketball/earth icon at the top of add printer page) with ip address of the printer (192.168....etc) and protocol AirPrint.
4) check you can print, you probably cannot scan (scanner connection error / or just nothing)
5) on macos: remove the printer
6) on macos: add printer - it should now be in the list and this time the driver should automatically come up.

result is that it now installs the HP printer with the airplay driver and that the scanning function works.

The effective difference after this success between macos 13.x and 14.x is that in the dock I no longer have the specific printer but instead have "print centre" (or what ever the spelling is of your MacOS language).  This shows a list of all print devices but is effectively the same for me when it comes to the HP printer.

I do think a step people are missing is removing all prior HP printer drivers (which I did manually in the system). Then I restarted and installed the linked HP drivers from the Apple website (provided on webpage 1 of this thread). Interestingly these are version 3.0, while my prior drivers were version 4.7 (I think--memory based). I'm now wondering if this buggy incident might be because not only did I upgrade to Sonoma, but I have a newish laptop with an M1 chip?? At any rate, as I said, you have to delete prior bad software and then restart so that you're using the newly installed software. Note: Sonoma has many new security items, so if you're prompted (under your Privacy and Security settings) to approve an unsigned (tsk! surely HP could have fixed just this one bit!) HP driver, you have to enter your user admin password to approve.

THIS TOTALLY DID THE TRICK!! Will also allow OS Sonoma to "see" and recognize scanner in HP all-in-ones so that image capture will work with this machine!

Thanks @DSale !

THANK YOU!! That did work for us.. Ridiculous that the actual driver setup that is supposed to be an automatic process was causing an error with no way to proceed and get around it but this 2020 driver solved this issue..

Get it together HP and Apple!!

Can you provide the thread?

I thank everyone on this board from the bottom of my heart. I have FOUR HP Color LaserJet M454dw's that I didn't get that long ago. I could not get any to print after Sonoma update and spent hours trying. I covered all suggestions and solutions in this thread as my company needs these printers. All of these steps to get you up and running are contained in detail on the first three pages of this thread. I used overkill as I need this to work. Do you need to do all my steps? Don't know but I know I'm printing now! Here you go: 1) Delete any existing printer in System Settings. 2) Download the HP 5.1.1 update (see earlier post for details) and have it ready on your desktop. 3) Delete ALL HP printer files from the system. Just search and find the "Resources" folder in the System then move these files to trash then empty trash. Restart mac. 3) Install the HP 5.1.1 update. Restart mac. 4) Create a static IP for your printer. Just google "Set up static IP printer 'name of router' (in my case, 'name of your router' was Netgear so my search was: Set up static IP printer Netgear. 5) Follow steps to assign your HP printer a static IP address. 6) Write down the IP address you have assigned to your HP. It will be something like 192.168.0.99. 7) Now go to System Settings to bottom selection and then "Add Printer." Select IP method of adding printer which is the middle selection at top. DON'T use default. 9) Type in the static address of your printer and it will auto populate software if correct. Choose AirPrint. 10) Now rename printer to whatever you like. 11) Do a test print. 12) SUCCESS! Thank you all very much!!
