Hello!

I am looking for some assistance from the community, and HP Support, to determine the best way to securely wipe an HP Printer when we receive them back from clients.

We are working, internally, to develop a printer policy that will conform with our current security policy. We are aware that the newest generation of HP printers contain hard drives that will retain a history of scanned, and printed, items that could be recovered if the device is compromised.

I have heard that HP has a tool that they use for securely wiping these devices and I'm looking to either get access to this tool or what the approved process HP has developed for ensuring that any data on the printer is securely removed.

Hello,

To meet the needs for higher levels of print and imaging security, HP has implemented a storage erase feature which meets the U.S. Department of Defense 5220-22.M requirements for clearing storage media when the administrator selects certain options and uses supported devices. This document describes the capabilities of HP Secure Erase and related information.
To meet the needs for higher levels of print and imaging security, Hewlett-Packard created HP Secure Erase for Imaging and Printing. This capability allows the administrator to erase print, scan, fax, and copy jobs from storage devices. Several levels of erase security are provided. The capability is provided as a standard feature on supported HP multifunction peripherals (MFPs), digital copiers, and printers when used with HP’s Web JetAdmin Version 7.8 (available separately). Some features are also available with Web Jetadmin Version 7.6 and compatible printers (see Question 3 in the Questions and Answers section).
HP Secure Erase provides a choice of three different modes of erase security, each of which can be configured by an administrator and may be protected from unauthorized changes with a password. The three erase security modes are:
Secure Sanitizing Erase mode: Conforms to the U.S. Department of Defense 5220-22.M specification for deleting magnetically stored data. Secure Sanitizing Erase uses multiple data overwrites to eliminate trace magnetic data and also prevents subsequent analysis of the hard disk drive’s physical platters for the retrieval of data. For an explanation of the erase algorithm implemented, see the Specifications section.
Secure Fast Erase mode: This mode completes the erasure faster than Secure Sanitizing Erase mode. Secure Fast Erase mode overwrites the existing data once, and prevents software based “undelete” operations to the data.
Non-secure Fast Erase mode: The quickest of the three erasing modes, , Non-secure Fast Erase mode marks the print job data as deleted, and allows the MFP’s operating system to reclaim and subsequently overwrite the data when needed.
Unless otherwise specified, temporary files are deleted from the storage device at the completion of their use. HP Secure Erase allows the user to change or control timing to erase applicable temporary files in three different ways (see the Data Affected section).
Secure File Erase erases files on a continuous basis as soon as they are no longer needed to perform the requested function.
Secure Storage Erase provides the following two capabilities:
On Demand erase –files are erased on a storage medium at once when an administrator requests it to be done.
Scheduled erase – On demand type erase can be scheduled to occur at a future time. In addition it can be scheduled on a recurring schedule so as to occur periodically.
