I have an Officejet 4500 printer, wireless, connected. It shows up in "HP Scan and Capture" as well as in "Printers and Scanners" in Windows.
It does however take extremely long to print. A one page text .doc takes about 8-9 minutes,
I got the advice from the "Virtual support agent" at HP support to print from HP Smart app. But the app doesn´t find the printer. I have reinstalled the app, followed the easy instructions, rebooted the computer, switched the printer off/on, reinstalled printer software. But no joy with Smart app. It just doesn't detect the printer.
What next?

Unfortunately, the HP Virtual Assistant is not able to check for vintage products and determine whether the application is a candidate. Code limitation.
Your older printer is not compatible with HP Smart.

Some possible scan options and comments.
Please IGNORE anything that you cannot / will not use, anything you do not like, or any suggestion or idea that is not relevant.
In general,
- The speed of the connection between the printer and the computer / network impacts the speed of a scan.
- The resolution impacts the speed of the scan. Higher resolutions (DPI) and slow connection takes a Long time to scan.
- The complexity of the item being scanned makes a difference, too.

Various Software / Applications for Scan
#1 skipped - not relevant
2. Windows Scan – Microsoft Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher
- “Get” the application from the Store > Windows Scan
3. Paint- the Original - Paint (mspaint) can be used to scan.
4. NAPS2– “Not Another PDF Scanner”
- Download-Save-Install > NAPS2
- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).

- Read the Support pages for information
- Download, save, and install the NAPS2 software to use.

OK, thanks for clarifying that the recommendation to use the Smart App was a dead end.
What should I do to be able to use my "vintage" printer with Windows 10, then? The Smart App is not important, but printing is.

You are welcome.
Not sure - printing, in general, should work.
It is the just "wrapper" to Solution Center that is "broken" due to flash having been disabled.
The installed Solution Center software, other than the direct call to open Solution Center itself should work.
For example,
Printing from Word, Adobe Reader DC , various image print software (Paint / Irfanview) - these should work, I think.
Excessive print times might be due to an incorrect paper size / type having been selected.
Honestly, though, I cannot prove / test / verify any of it.
I don't have anything old enough to try it for you.
Everything after 2015 is not impacted by the loss of Flash.
Stay Safe.
