HP Ink Tank 315
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I just bought an Ink Tank 315 printer and am having trouble with the installation. The HP Easy Start says it is unable to communicate with the device. I've restarted my computer and the printer and checked connections. Any suggestions?

@jenfromchile, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To isolate the issue, I would like to know the following:

Do you have any antivirus/security software installed on your computer?

Are the printer and the computer connected to the same network?

Perform a ping test and share the results:

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon https://support.hp.com/wps/hp-skp-portlets/document/attachments/162/c02131772.gif on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost

Note: There should be 0% packet loss

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Sorry, it doesn't seem to have a wireless icon. The HP utility (installed via an apple download) similarly does not provide one, but it does retrieve information from the printer and will print a test page.

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.

For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

Remove and add the printer

Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete the printer.

Select printer and click the minus sign

Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner.

Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select Secure AirPrint, AirPrint, or the name of your printer if available.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

Click Add to add the printer to the list.

Try to print.
