Thanks very much, Dragon-Fur for continuing to help me.  I read through all my online info from yesterday after I did the printer setup.  On the Print Information Page I printed off yesterday, it says this printer is not connected to the internet so I'm wondering if that's the problem. On my old HP printer I used a USB Cable that looks like an ethernet cable ~ one end plugged into the back of my HP Desktop computer, the other end plugged into the back of my old HP Printer.  So it appears the reason the information page says my new printer is not connected to the internet is because I'm not using that old USB Cable, right?

I can't see WHERE to plug the USB Cable into my new printer.  There's a small round hole opening at the back of the new printer to the right of the power cord but the USB Cable I have from my old printer won't fit into that hole because that Cable is shaped square like an Ethernet Cable.

The Printer Information Page says my new printer is connected to my wireless network and t hat the signal strength is excellent.  There was no USB Cable included in the box with my new printer and on the box it says it wasn't included.   So...shouldn't my new printer be able to print seeing that the wireless network is connected meaning I shouldn't have to use a USB Cable?  I'd really appreciate your feedback on what I related here in this post before I uninstall the new printer and do a fresh installation.  Thanks so much.

Welcome back.

A USB cable is not used to connect the printer to the Internet.

A USB cable is only used to connect the printer to the computer without a network.

The USB cable connection is not a solution for your need for a full service connection.

This "what is connected and where" can be a bit confusing, I know.

Generally,

There are two parts to the printer connection to your network and to the Internet

  •  Wireless connection between the printer and your network router connects your printer to your home network
  • "Web Services" connects the printer to the Internet / Cloud Services - Web Services are used to expand the ways the printer can be used

The Wireless connection from the printer to to you home network, with the addition of the installed printer software, provides most everything you need to send print and scan jobs to your printer.

The Web Services connection is used to provide for extra services that require your printer to communicate with services outside of your local network.  For example, Web Services is used to connect your printer to the HP+ service (if enabled) and Web Services connects your printer to available "Share" printing and Cloud Services used with HP Smart (Windows).

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one or more of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared
  • Installation continues to fail

Try this “Offline” Doctor version:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

After the doctor runs, Restart the computer and log in.

Doctor will finish any necessary setups.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

If there are two printers in Devices and Printers,

If one of them does not work,

Try sending your job to the “Copy 1” named printer.

Later

If you want / need to rename the “Copy 1” printer:

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove the part that says “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

==============================================================================

A "device"  or missing software message means the critical part of the installation is failing after the software itself is loaded and the printer is trying to connect.

Reloading and reloading software sometimes cannot fix the problem if the software is not the source of the issue.

What works depends on where the source of the failure is located.

Check / Adjust the printer connection to TCP/IP

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address

OR Tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address

2. On your PC, Open Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.

3. Click Add Port > Select Standard TCP/IP Port > Select New Port and follow the wizard.

4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

Thanks so much, Dragon-Fur for such detailed information, it's so kind of you.  Mostly what I wanted to know was that a USB cable is not used to connect the printer to the internet.  Alas most of this info is way over my head but I'll keep going over it more thoroughly.

I'm going to start posting on the PRINTERS forum now seeing that's my subject right now.  So I'll do so right away.  Many thanks again for giving  me so much information and trying to help me out.

You are welcome.

Yes, it is a lot all at once.

It's a bit like being told you need to work on your car to get it running - and you've never peaked under the hood before.

Reading a bit at a time is perhaps a way to start.

The "offline" doctor might well uncover any issues and at least make it so you can print and scan.

The Web Services is a tricky thing - the printer can try to connect to Web Services and it works.  All good.

The printer can try - everything else in the world being perfect - and fail to connect.

Web Services does not "break" everything when it doesn't work - but it can complicate some operations.

If you can get the driver fixed, then tackle Web Services.

If Web Services will NOT run, it is likely not even your fault - we don't have any way to influence whether Web Services is up / down / sideways.  Can be down for minutes, hours, days -- or can run perfectly fine for months.  Sigh.

Web Services (running on the printer) is used to communicate between the printer and the Cloud servers.  For this reason, Web Services must be running on the printer: HP Printers - Turning on Web Services

The  Wireless printing center may - or may not - talk about Web Services.  That said, the site is a good place to learn a bit about your network and how it works.

Good Luck.

IF you have enabled HP+ (optional), contact the HP+ Concierge help desk for help.

Note that there are requirements and restrictions involved with the HP+ service - it can be very nice to have - HP+ is not something for which you want to sign-and-go without first knowing what you are getting into.

Thanks yet again, Dragon-Fur, for all your posts in an attempt to get my new printer working.  I've gone over to the HP Printers forum now.  I didn't enable HP+ when I did my setup yesterday.  I think I'm going to have to get Best Buy's Geek Squad to come to my house....but good luck with that due to covid cases rising.  Oh well, at least my lovely 2-year old HP Desktop computer has been working great.  Again thanks so much, Dragon-Fur, and Happy Holidays!

We are all in the same Community.

Printers is a board in the HP Community and there are several "sub" categories.

We are all the same group.

That said, yes - there are OTHER printer communities and forums on the net - just don't let anyone log into your computer or tell you that you computer or printer is full of bugs.  Scammers.

Yes, certainly ask someone else for help - most of the Experts won't bury you in details.  Smiling.

I will monitor but not answer.

Good Luck.

If you don't get the answer you want / need,

Consider trying the offline doctor - it might fix your driver installation issue.

Hey Dragon-Fur, we've got to stop meeting like this ~ don't you wish ~ LOL!

No worries, I'm super careful when it comes to scammers but thanks for cautioning me.

Holy smokes, Dragon-Fur, looks like I got my new printer working.  Here's what I had to do in case it may help someone else ~

(1) I went into my computer Printer Settings and ran the Printer troubleshooter.  It detected an error showing I had to set my new printer as my DEFAULT printer.  So I then had to Google search to find out how to do that.  But nothing would appear to set my new printer as my default printer.

(2) Then I noticed at the bottom of my computer Printer Settings something that said ~ Let Windows manage my default printer and I've always had that checked with a check mark to do so.  I decided to UNCHECK it and was then able to set my new printer as my default printer.

(3) Then I did some testing and was able to print off an email.  Next I typed a few lines on WordPad that I use a lot for typing personal and business letters and I was able to print that off too.

The only thing I wasn't able to print was my monthly bank statements off my online banking website which I could always do on my old printer until it bit the dust last week.  But no big deal, that info is there online and I mostly just print emails and letters on Word Pad.  Wish me continued good luck and thanks a million again, Dragon-Fur, for your superb patience and excellent help.

Excellent.

Good job.

Odd that the installation procedure used to install the full driver printer software did not ask and then set the default printer device.  Certainly the Doctor might have caught this.   I admit that I did not think to ask - it is a basic setting, too.

Odd Default Printer behavior

True - Not having the printer selected as default would mean that each time you submitted a job you would have to pre-select the printer.

"Let Windows Manage my Printer" is useful for some people though it does appear to annoy others.  The setting pre-selects the printer default based on "last used".  Good for those who travel from one location to another.  It does seem to "catch" once in a while though that observation could be "me" and not the fault of the setting.

Cannot Print Some Content - Bank Statements

The last bit you mention, that of printing bank statements, is perhaps just a translation error.

If the printer cannot translate the content it receives into "printer language", that part of the content might fail, behave oddly, or cause other anomalies in the print job.

Thanks for saying excellent job, Dragon Fur, don't we all enjoy some praise by times.  Yes, it's odd that the installation procedure used to install the full driver printer software didn't ask and then set the default printer device.

My sister-in-law just sent me an email telling me what to do about printing off my bank website as she deals with the same bank.  So I'll give that a try in a bit.

ONE MORE QUESTION?  I deleted/removed my old printer from everywhere on my computer.  But I can't get it removed from the HP Support Assistant Dashboard.  It's a 15-year old HP Photosmart C3100.  When I click onto this old printer on the Support Assistant Dashboard, a block comes up that says CANCEL which is what I want to do.  Then when I click CANCEL, it asks for the old Printer's NICKNAME.  I have no idea what the nickname is.  My now deceased husband  did the setup on this old printer and he didn't write down the nickname nor let me know what it was.  Amazing the various procedures involved when upgrading to new computers and printers.  Do you know what I could do to find out the nickname of the old printer or some means to get around this so I can get that old printer off the HP Support Assistant Dashboard?

BTW.....your posts are superbly formulated and well laid out, very admirable, Dragon-Fur.
