I am trying to reinstall software for wireless printing on my Mac OS 10.13.6. I have tried using HP Easy Start, tried updating driver and firmware using Firmware Updater for N911g-n, tried installing by IVP4 and IP address. Have not been able to get further than installing by IP address. The printer is connected to my network and I can print by emailing files to the printer's email address, but I am unable to print directly using wifi. Looking for help installing the correct driver and returning to full functionality. Thanks for any help.

A warm welcome to HP forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer is AirPrint compatible, let's try setting up the printer using AirPrint. Here is how to do it:
1.) Turn off your Mac, Printer and Router.
2.) Unplug the power from the back of router, wait for 10 -15 seconds.
3.) Connect the power cable back to router, turn on the router first. Wait till the router to initialize.
4.) Turn on Printer and Mac.
5.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
6.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
7.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
8.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
9.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
10.) Try to print and scan.
Let me know how it goes!

It looks like the Mac is not able to detect the network connected printer.
What's the make and model of your WiFi router?
Could you also perform a ping test using the Network Utility on Mac and let me know the result. Use the printer IP address and perform a ping test.

The router is from CenturyLink, model number C30000Z.
The ping test returned these results:

It looks like a 100% packet loss. It's possible that router is either blocking or not able to forward multicast packets(Bonjour). Disabling HPNA may resolve the issue, however we cannot disable HPNA if there is coaxial cable connected to the HPNA socket behind the router. Check the image below:
If you see an coaxial cable connected to the HPNA socket behind the router please do not disable HPNA, if a coaxial cable is not connected then try disabling HPNA on the router. Access the router GUI(Graphical user interface) using a web browser and go to the HPNA status settings and disable HPNA.
Once you disable HPNA, restart, router, Mac and printer. Then try a Ping test using the Network Utility in Mac.
Keep me posted!

There is no HPNA port on the back of the routerI contacted my internet provider and we created a new network but I am still not able to print to it. I was able to print when finishing the HP printer setup routine using Easy Start, but cannot repeat it. The only progress I made was the ping test now returns no errors.

Let's try temporarily disabling firewall on Mac:
1.) Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
2.) Click Security or Security & Privacy.
3.) Click the Firewall tab.
4.) Unlock the pane by clicking the lock in the lower-left corner and enter the administrator username and password.
5.) Click "Turn Off Firewall"
6.) Try to print.
If you have any anti virus software installed, like McAfee. Try disabling the anti virus software and then try to print.

1. The Mac firewall was not turned on so I did not turn it off. I was connected to my regular wifi network non-5G version, printer was connected to the new WIFI4printer network, and I was able to print. Connected computer to 5G network, left printer on its network and was not able to print. Switched computer back to non-5G network and was able to print. FWIW I have a VPN and have turned it off during this testing to remove it as a variable.
2. Turned on firewall and could not print. Turned off firewall and could not print. Tried switching wifi networks and could not print. Switched back to non-5G network and could not print.
I am back at not being able to print. How do we understand being able to print and then not being able to print?

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus has a 802.11 b/g/n – 2.4 GHz wireless radio. I believe the printer and the Mac has to be connected to a 2.4Ghz network, if your 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz networks have same network name (SSID), then try changing the network name(SSID) of 2.4Ghz network and reconnect the printer and Mac to the 2.4Ghz network. Once the Mac and Printer is connected to the 2.4Ghz network then try to print.
