HP Laserjet 4L
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Hi,

I'm trying to find drivers for my HP Laserjet 4L to install the printer on my MacBook Air. The printer still works so I'd like to keep using it with my new computer. I can't find the driver for Mac on HP support because the printer is old.

thanks!

The LaserJet 4L never had an official HP driver.  There was a similar model called the 4ML that contained PostScript which had macOS support.

If you can get the 4L connected to your macOS client then you can try using the Generic PCL driver that is built into the OS.  That may allow you to print.  Select the + to add a printer and then select the LaserJet 4L.  Then next to Use: select Generic "PCL Printer".

It does not look like Gutenprint has been updated for macOS 10.15 yet.  Typically that would be another source of drivers for a PCL based printer.

While I may work for HP Inc, the views and opinions expressed here are my own.

@SGard

Can you please advise whether this worked for you?

And, if so, can you also please confirm what version of macOS you have running on your MacBook Air?

I am trying to find out whether my parents' LaserJet 4L can be used with their iMac if they upgrade to macOS Catalina - and IronBadger's suggestion is the closest I have come to finding an answer.

Many thanks in advance.
