I just purchased the Smart Tank 5101. I just started the set up process. I added the liquid ink, my next step is to install the printhead. The carriage is stuck on the left side and thus I cannot install the print head. I attempted all of the trouble shooting steps on the website; i turned off the unit and unplugged it from the outlet, i ensure all firewalls/systems were updated, I check for blockage in the unit. None of this resolved the issue. The carriage is still stuck on the left side of the unit. I don't want to force it to move because that might damage the printer. Can you assist me with this issue please?

Hi @newprinterowner,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already taken some thorough steps to resolve the issue with your Smart Tank 5101, but the carriage remains stuck. Here are a few additional steps you might consider to potentially solve this problem:
Reset the Printer: You've mentioned turning it off and unplugging it, but sometimes a longer reset can help. Unplug the printer for at least 3 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This might help if there's any residual electronic charge causing issues.
Manual Movement Check:
- First, ensure that the printer is turned off and unplugged to avoid any electrical damage or moving parts injuring you.
- Gently try to move the carriage by hand. It should normally move freely when there is no power. Do not force it; just check if it can move slightly or if it feels completely jammed.
Check for Internal Obstructions:
- With the printer off and unplugged, use a flashlight to look inside the printer where the carriage rests. Sometimes, packing material, bits of tape or paper, or even accumulated dust can obstruct the carriage path.
- If you see any obstructions, gently remove them using tweezers or a soft brush.
Check the Carriage Path:
- Look for any damage or debris along the carriage path that might be causing the issue. This includes checking for any sticky residues from labels or spilled ink.
Lubricate the Carriage Rail:
- If the rail that the carriage slides on appears dry or dirty, you might want to clean it with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. After cleaning, you can apply a tiny amount of light machine oil or any lubricant specified by your printer manual.
Re-seat the Carriage:
- If you managed to move the carriage slightly, try to gently slide it back and forth a few times (with the printer off and unplugged) to see if it becomes easier to move.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you. Your response resolved my problem. I gave the carriage a gentle pull. I herd a click so I closed the printer door. Next, I plugged the printer back into the outlet and turned it on. The carriage moved to the center and I was able to proceed with installing the printhead.
