HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One

I have been using this printer (it is a replacement HP did for the original that stopped working 8 months into service, and so HP only gave me four months warranty) for about 7 months and it has worked ok...but today it would not scan and I got a pop up message telling me to turn off and back on, which I did.  It now works but when I use the HPSmart option, I have a pop up asking me to finish setting up...not sure why as this has never appeared....when I click it asks for a password, which I have no idea about as I dont think I set up initially with a password.  How do I stop this request?

Hi @cjm111 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I can understand how confusing and frustrating it must be to encounter this unexpected prompt, especially when your printer was working fine until now. Let’s figure this out together and get your HP Smart Tank 7301 back to normal.

  • When the setup prompt appears, does it indicate it’s for a Wi-Fi connection or another type of setup?
  • Are you able to print or scan without using the HP Smart app, such as directly from your device’s built-in tools or other software?
  • Have you recently changed your Wi-Fi network, password, or made any updates to your computer or mobile device?

Let's try these steps.

Power Cycle Your Printer and Device:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Restart your computer or mobile device.
  • Plug the printer back in, power it on, and try accessing HP Smart again.

Check Printer Connectivity:

  • Make sure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Settings and confirm the connection.
  • If needed, re-enter your Wi-Fi credentials.

Reset Printer Network Settings:

  • If the pop-up suggests completing a Wi-Fi setup, reset the printer’s network settings:
    • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons on the printer until the power light blinks.
    • Reconnect the printer to your network using the HP Smart app or by entering the Wi-Fi credentials directly on the printer’s control panel.

Update or Reinstall HP Smart:

  • Ensure you’re using the latest version of the HP Smart app. If unsure, uninstall and reinstall the app from the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, or Google Play Store.
  • Reopen the app and follow any prompts for setup. If it asks for a password, try your Wi-Fi password, as this is often what’s required.

Use a Browser to Complete Setup:

  • If the setup prompt persists, open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address (you can find this in the printer’s Network Settings menu).
  • Log in to the printer’s embedded web server. If prompted for a password, try the default options:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: Leave it blank or use the Wi-Fi Direct PIN (printed on the label on the back or bottom of the printer).
  • Complete the setup or disable any setup-related features.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thank you for taking time to address my problem.....I tried using the scan option several times again and always got the same pop up prompt, so finally just went through all the process to complete registering the printer (again).  The process asked me to enter an ID found inside, which I had done previously.  I went through all the steps again and the printer is working ok now.  Not sure why this would happen, but all that is important is that it will print and scan.

I am not as happy with this printer as I was with my all in one laser jet printer as it will not copy or scan front and back, but it will do until it breaks again like most printers do over time and I have to replace it again.  Thank you for your timely reply.
