After changing to a different computer, I realized that I didn't have the scanning software installed so I couldn't scan. I downloaded the current version of the software and tried to install it. It took forever, then it hung when it was 99% finished and it finally aborted with an error message that the process took too long so it was stopped. I tried again, with the same result. I found an older version of the software -- the version that was on my other computer and which functioned perfectly for several years -- and tried that. The result was the same -- very long install, it hung at 99% complete, then it aborted.
Following suggestions from this site, I disabled the Windows firewall and tried again. The result was the same. Then I tried running the installation as administrator. The result was still the same. Finally, I tried running the installation in compatibility mode. I told it to run as Windows 7, and that was the answer. The installation only took a few seconds, and the scanner is now available and functioning.
I hope this may help someone else who has the same problem. I don't know why H-P hasn't updated the installation software to run under Windows 10, but at least there is a work-around.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.
Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor: Follow the steps from the link: Click here
Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP laserjet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
To reinstall, click here.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Did you even read my post?
** I ** solved the problem, idiot. All the suggestions from H-P failed. ** I ** figured out -- all on my own -- that the solution is to run the installer in compatibility mode under Windows.
If you really want to help, tell H-P to update the driver installation software so that it runs under Windows 10.
