Up until a few days ago my HP Envy 4500 was printing and scanning from the computer. Now it won't do either. They are both installed on the same wireless connection, and the printer will print the diagnostics page which says ut has excellent connectivity. My laptop doesn't seem to have the printer/scanner installed on it anymore, and when I looked to see whether there was a program that I could uninstall and then reinstall, it came up saying the soft or firm ware npath was available anymore. The weird thing is that the printer will print from my smartfone, which is, of course on the same home wireless network. I have been going round in circles on your support pages, and tried the print and scan doctor, and that didn't help me either. I just want a link to the right installation software so that I can reinstall it onto my laptop. Even if I still had the disc that came with the printer it would be no good, as my laptop has no disc drive. My laptop is only just over a year old, an HP Pavilion, and I must have installed it when I first had the laptop. Please, please help me!

There are two ways to print from a device that has wifi.
1-If you enable the "WiFi Direct" on the printer, then any smartphone or laptop can "find: the printer by looking for the SSID of the printer. All devices must be on the same wifi band usually 2.4ghz. This can be a problem on dual band routers as usually the smart phones use 5ghz
2-If you connect the printer to the router then there is no requirement that all other devices be on the 2.4ghz band as the devices communicate with the printer through the modem / router instead of AirPrint

Bring up "printers and scanners" and remove the printer.
If you see the printer listed several times remove all of them.
Then do the "add printer" and let it find the printer
if it does not find the printer then a network problem as your phone can find it.
You should also install the latest full service software. It may be old but possibly Microsoft put in a basic driver that is missing items the full feature has;.
Full feature software 4500e-4504e Dec 2021
This printer only supports the 2.4ghz band
let me know if a problem installing the derivers or if the PC cannot find the printer on the network.

Thank you. before i try your suggestions, in the order that you gave them, i want to query what you said about the network. that's what i found odd; the phone is on the same network as printer/scanner and laptop, yet only the phone connects with the printer. i even put off the wifi on the phone, and tried printing with just my mobile data, but of course, it didn't! Sorry to ramble on, but i will go off and try your suggestions and let you know the outcome.
many thanks

Right. I first removed the printer/scanner, but when I tried to add it again, it didn't find any printer, either automatically or manually. So next I installed the software from your link, and checked my internet was working on both the laptop and the printer. It was, but when it had found the printer, and I had added its URL, and went through all the next steps, it kept telling me that I had no internet connection and to retry. I did that a few times, but zilch, so I just exited. I really don't understand what is going on. I actually contacted my ISP provider to say that I thought there was something wrong with my router/modem. He did some remote checking and I went through the usual steps of on/off etc, and he said it was fixed, but I think I might have to ring up again! But just last night the internet just dropped from my pc, and I had to do a network reset. This has happened a few times, and I think it must be something to do with the ISP, regardless of the phone managing to print. I would by an independent router and/or modem, but I know very little about them, plus I might end up wasting my money, if that doesn't help either! Any more suggestions will be gratefully received. Thanks again.

That is the strange thing! That even though they are all on the same network, the pc doesn't seem to recognize the printer, and nearly at the end of installation from the link, the last poster gave me, it says no network found. I will try that Wireless Direct option next. I didn't need to! I first tried one from my phone, and that printed. Then, just on the offchance, I tried printing a pade directly from the computer, and it printed! After first causing a paper jam, but I didn't care. Then I tried to scan it, and my laptop name came up immediately, (before it usually just said "others!"), and the scan worked too! so thank you both.

Thank you so much for your help. I don't know if you read the other poster's suggestion, and my reply, but that certainly goes out to you too! Enen though it told me no internet had been detected, right near the end of my installation of the printer, but it seems to work now with my pc as well, printing and scanning. A slight paper-jam was the extent of my worries! I will know where to come if I have another HP problem, and no doubt I will, at some point! I dare say it was a microsoft update that caused it, because I have heard of people complaining about that. All the best, Bundle 1
