HP LaserJet M208dw Printer

I am trying to configure Print queues for several new HP Laserjet M208dw printers on a Windows 2022 server. I was originally using HP UPD v 6.9.0 to configure the printers in Print Management.  Everything went great, with no errors for all the tasks (driver installation, Port configuration and Printer configuration).  The problem is that I cannot get the "Print Test Page" function to work properly.  I am geting the following error:

HP m208dw.png

I tried updating the driver to the latest (HP UPD 7.7.0) and got the same results.   Any thoughts on what could be causing this error?

These are networked printers using TCP/IP .

Hi @JimM1077,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the details and your setup. You've done a thorough job configuring the HP LaserJet M208dw printers using both HP Universal Print Driver versions 6.9.0 and 7.7.0, and it's great to hear that driver and port installation completed without errors.

However, where the “Print Test Page” function fails on Windows Server 2022, even though everything appears correctly installed — I’d like to share a few important points: We’d like to inform you that HP does not officially support printing issues on Windows Server operating systems, including Windows Server 2022, within the scope of standard HP consumer printer support.

Due to these complexities, we strongly recommend involving your internal IT team or system administrator. They can troubleshoot within the unique parameters of your organization's server environment.

That said, here are general best practices you can try:

1. Use Device-Specific Driver Instead of UPD

2. Verify Port Configuration

  • In Print Management > Ports, ensure you’re using:
    • Standard TCP/IP Port (not WSD).
    • Hostname or static IP of the printer.
    • SNMP Status Enabled: Try disabling SNMP in port settings if enabled, as it may cause job hangups or errors.

3. Check Driver Isolation

  • In Print Management > Drivers, right-click the installed driver:
    • Select Set Driver Isolation > Isolated.
    • This helps avoid cross-driver conflicts in multi-printer environments.

4. Spooler & Permissions

  • Confirm that the Print Spooler service is running under the Local System account.
  • Make sure the print$ share and driver store have the correct permissions for deployment.

5. Try Test Print from Client

  • Install the printer queue on a Windows client and try printing a test page.
    • If this works, the issue may be tied to server-to-printer communication or UPD limitations.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
