I have 12 new and unused original HP cartridges which are a few years old as I buy cartridges in bulk. The new firmware update for the OfficeJet 7720 is not allowing me to use any of these cartridges. These are ORIGINAL cartridges and not compatibles. How can I reverse the firmware update to allow me to use these cartridges?

Hi @nigelmarston,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating when firmware updates interfere with your ability to use genuine HP cartridges. Unfortunately, reverting firmware updates on printers can be quite tricky, and it's often not recommended due to potential risks to the printer's functionality and security.

However, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check for Firmware Rollback Options: Occasionally, printer manufacturers offer rollback options for firmware updates. Check the HP support website or user manual to see if there's a way to revert to a previous firmware version that may not have the cartridge restrictions.
  • Use Genuine HP Cartridges: While this may not be the ideal solution, using genuine HP cartridges that are compatible with the updated firmware should resolve the issue. It's not uncommon for printers to release firmware updates that enforce the use of genuine cartridges to ensure optimal performance and print quality.
  • Consider Third-Party Solutions: There may be third-party tools or services available that claim to bypass cartridge restrictions imposed by firmware updates. However, proceed with caution when exploring these options, as they may void your printer's warranty or cause other issues.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Keep an eye out for future firmware updates from HP. Sometimes, subsequent updates may address compatibility issues or provide additional options for cartridge usage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
