I recently purchased an M1 MacBook Air and I'm finding that I am unable to print using my HP Deskjet 1560. Other older devices are able to print using this device. Here's what I have tried:
- First, I added the printer using the "Printers & Scanners" option in System Preferences. The OS recognized the printer and added the drivers for it. However, when I go to print, nothing happens: the document gets sent to the printer (which is made clear by HP Deskjet app opening) and then...nothing. The queue remains empty. I tried restarting the computer but this didn't resolve the issue. I have also tried printing from multiple applications but none of them have been able to print.
After this, I tried manually downloading the drivers from support.hp.com. However, when I am told that “We were unable to find drivers for your product.” - Further, the suggestion is given to manually select my OS. Unfortunately, the OS list ends at macOS 10.9 (and I am running 11.2.1). Following that defeat I thought that if maybe HP Easy Start would resolve the issue. To this end I did a web search for “HP Easy Start Mac”. The first two links were legit HP links and I tried both. Unfortunately, both took me to an HP page “We were unable to find drivers for your product” (and, once again, it was suggested I try manually selecting my OS).
- Then I remembered that there is an HP printing app available through the App Store for Macs. I downloaded the app and went through the process to set up a new printer. I had to choose USB since this printer is not wireless and is not connected to the ethernet. However, after a few minutes of waiting a dialogue box appeared stating “USB not connected to printer.” I can assure you that not only is the printer connected at both ends (and powered on) but also that macOS recognizes that a printer is connected.
The only other piece of information that could be relevant is that the computer and the printer are connected via a USB hub. The Mac only has USB-C type ports but the printer has USB-A, and so I need to use a hub to connect the two. I assume a USB-A to USB-C cable wouldn’t change anything since the computer does in fact recognize the printer, but I’m happy to entertain that as a suggestion.
At this point I am at a loss. This printer still works very well and I don’t particularly want to buy a new computer. I also don’t want to have to switch to older computers every time I print.
Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @nassimsultan,
I'd like to help!
HP Deskjet D1560 Printer driver for macOS 11 is not available from the HP website or Apple Software Update. However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the heads up, this looks like a fantastic resource! I've searched the supported printers list a few different ways and I can't find the DeskJet 1560 (or 1500 or D1500). Even so, I appreciate your help!

That's unfortunate, I recommend you look into replacement options.
You may reach the HP Phone support team for the same.
Follow the instructions below to reach them:
1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
6)Fill the web-form and proceed further.
If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
Have a great day!
