HP Deskjet 1112
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Hello,

I have a brand new printer that I am unable to use with my Macbook Pro, OS Big Sur 11.3.1.
I followed the instructions in the box, downloaded HP Easy Start, which recognizes the printer is there, then I download HP Smart to finish the installation and it says it "cannot find printer". I have done this about 12 times.

I also followed the instructions found on this previous forum post, uninstalling previous software, resetting the printing system, etc:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Deskjet-1112-mac-os-10-12-3-won-t-print...

Unfortunately it seems that these steps are out of date because when you get to this step:
"Restart the MAC and connect the printer to your computer and run an Apple update.

HP Printers - Installing a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update"..... this website leads you to "Apple no longer provides HP print drivers through Apple Software Update (ASU)."

I would like some advice please. It's been a week of me trying to figure this new printer out and I can't seem to get it done. I need to use it... hence buying a printer.

Thank you

Hi all,

I managed to figure out how to install the printer and have it working on Mac through a phone call with HP Thailand. Basically when you download HP Easy Start there is an option to "skip software download" which allows you to not download HP Smart (which seems to be the issue with my Mac). Be sure that all HP software has been removed before trying this again, then follow the instructions after pressing "skip software download"

@Ev-P, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to install he printer on the Mac, let us try these steps:

Make sure the cable is directly connected between the Mac and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the Mac? If yes, disable the same for time being.

To check, select the Go menu on the top of the screen and go to the Applications folder.

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your Mac:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus

Reinstall the HP Smart app from the App Store. The latest version is 12.7.1

Try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hello, I've tried the previous options the other previous person pointed out.

I'm running macOS Catalina 10.15.7.

When I went into System Report, there was only a USB 3.1, none for 2.0

What should I do?

USB 3.1 ports are backward compatible. Is the printer listed under USB port 3.1?

If it is not listed, the printer is not detected by the Mac. Check the connection, try a different USB port or a different USB cable.

Check if your security software is blocking it.

Keep me posted.

Yes, the printer is listed under USB 3.1, but it still doesn't print.

It means the connectivity between the printer and the Mac is fine. Click here to download HP Easy Start and install the driver by following the on-screen instructions.

Try printing.

For more info, you may refer to - HP printer setup (USB cable)

Follow the steps under "Set up a USB printer connection with a built-in driver (Mac)"

Let me know how it goes.

hello, having the same issue. I followed all your steps. one thing I want to note is no matter which USB port I plug my DeskJet 1112 into under system report it always shows up under usb 3.0 bus. (note I am on an older Mac 2015 model.) I get all the way to the easy start where my printer is recognized but after downloading hp smart I am stuck in an endless cycle of trying to setup my printer but hp smart can never seem to find the printer.

USB 3.0 port is backward compatible. If the printer is listed, it means the connectivity is fine.

Please delete the app from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP Smart. Then delete HP Smart from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store.

Did you try to install basic drivers?

Refer to - HP printer setup (USB cable)

Follow the steps under "Set up a USB printer connection with a built-in driver (Mac)"

Let me know how it goes.

I tried to use the basic driver. still the same result. I can see it 'load' or process and go into the queue. it only stays there for maybe a second and the system acts as if the pages printed. I tried using print a test page and I also tried printing something from my documents. but it just goes back into idle. I used 'generic PCL printer' that did not work. so I followed the steps again and tried selecting the software after clicking that I chose hp Deskjet series. it seems as though the only way i can make this work is with hp smart. and it will not detect the printer. I'm still on the original set of ink and this printer has sat in a large desk drawer so it's basically still new. I know it's not an ink problem with the heads or anything being dried out because the machine does not even attempt to print.
