If your HP printer feeds paper but doesn’t print anything, here are the most common causes and how to fix them:

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check Ink or Toner Levels

  • Open the HP Smart app or printer control panel.
  • Check if any cartridges are empty or low.
  • If using ink, try replacing or reseating the cartridges.


2. Run Printhead Cleaning

  • On the printer screen or HP Smart app:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
    • Run the cleaning cycle and try printing again.


3. Print a Test Page

  • This helps confirm if the issue is with the printer or the computer.
  • On the printer: Settings > Reports > Print Quality Report or Test Page.
  • If the test page prints fine, the issue is likely with the computer or software.


4. Check Printer Settings on Your Computer

  • Make sure the correct printer is selected.
  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (Windows) or System Settings > Printers (Mac).
  • Right-click your printer > Printer Preferences > ensure it's not set to “Print to file” or “Use only black ink.”


5. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Go to HP Support and download the latest drivers for your model.
  • Uninstall the current printer from your computer and reinstall it using the updated software.
