HP LaserJet M110we Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi, I've just purchased an HP Laserjet M110we printer. I just took it out of the box, removed all the packaging, and plugged it in. Both the blue (wireless) light and the red (exclamation point) light immediately began blinking--the blue light more slowly than the red one--and they've continued to blink despite my doing the following:

a) giving it some time (a half hour at least);

b) turning it off, waiting 60 seconds, and turning it back on;

c) unplugging it and plugging it back in;

d) disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer;

e) holding down the flashing red light for 20 seconds;

f) checking to be sure I'd done everything else the HP installation video shows you how to do;

e) repeating all of these steps multiple times.

(As you can probably imagine, I'm pretty frustrated. I've just wasted two hours.)

I've downloaded HP Smart and tried to connect, but it repeatedly tells me it can't find the printer. (I've exited and reopened the app and tried many times.) My wireless connection in this room is very strong.  I have no problem with it on any other device.

The user manual says that when both lights are blinking, that means it's initializing or cooling and I should wait. But it can't be doing that for an hour, can it?

I can't print a test page to see if there's an error.

Possible clue: There are two small black plastic tabs on the front of the printer, above the paper-loading tray. Are they supposed to be there? I didn't see anything about them in the video. I don't see an obvious way to remove them. Are they a part of the packaging? Should I be trying to take them off? I can't upload a photo here, but they're about 5 cm wide, and made of thick plastic.

Another possible clue: The cartridge didn't come with the orange strips that I saw in the installation video. I think that probably means they took them off in the store, right?

I have no idea what else it could be. I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) running OS Monterey 12.4.

I tried asking the virtual assistant, but got into a doom loop of being sent to the same support page about blinking lights, coming back and saying that it didn't fix the problem, being asked to rephrase the question, getting sent to the same support page ...

And the HP.123 page is down.

If anyone can help me with this, I'll be grateful until all eternity. Thank you!

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help.

Do check with your network provider, the encryption type of your new network and whether it's 2.4 or 5 GHz.

Check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.  Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Hi, this seems to be the correct answer because I called the HP help line and they told me the same thing--although for what it's worth, I have a brand new Mac and clearly Bonjour is *not* built in to the OS. So I upvoted this for being, I think, correct.

But it is also outrageous.

I have a new MacBook Pro. I live in the center of Paris and have exactly the same kind of high-speed Internet service as everyone else who lives in the center of France's largest city.

HP is selling a product that doesn't work, out of the box, with the world's most commonly owned computer and the most standard variety of Internet service in Europe. They're clearly well aware of this problem, as this response suggests, yet the product hasn't been recalled, nor did I receive *any* warning of this problem before I purchased it.

It is obviously unacceptable to sell a product--by advertising its simplicity!--that requires a considerable minority (if not the majority) of new users to waste a good eight or nine hours trying to set it up, only to fail, then to have to wait on hold trying to reach a customer service representative, who will tell them that they need to contact their Internet Service Provider to change--if they can!--the encryption type of their network. (I assure you they won't change it, and it's no small matter to reach one of their customer service operators, either.)

This is just wrong. By any reasonable standard, this is a defective product, and one that shouldn't be sold at all--and if it is, should be sold with a bold type, front-and-center warning that it should *only* be purchased by people who are willing to spend hours on line with their ISP negotiating its encryption type. I would not have bought it if I had known, and I dare say very few people would.

This isn't your fault, of course: You work for HP but didn't make the decision to sell this piece of junk. However, I'd be grateful if you'd forward this to the people who did, telling them it's the last time I buy an HP product.

Thank you.
