Where is the paper output tray on my Desk Jet 2710?

I have forgotten how to open the paper output tray on my printer which is part of the printer set up routine. . I need the flat surface to neatly pile printouts. At present I have no tray in place.  I can see where it is stored but how do I get it to drop down and create a flat surface?

According to the  User Guide, the output tray is not so much a tray as a slide-out bar intended to balance the paper as it leaves the printer.
