Perhaps amidst all the shouting and outrage is a hint that might explain what has happened.

The printer does not need a Warranty to be used --

If printers had to be in-Warranty to be used, the world would be covered by dead out-of-warranty printers.

Conversely, having a hardware Warranty is not a guarantee that a device will continue to function.

Whether the device -- a printer in this case -- works is not related to whether the device is covered by a current Warranty.

What else?

If you received an email that your printing was about to be stopped, it might have been because you have (had) and Instant Ink subscription contract.  After any agreed-to Trial period, the contract is charged monthly.

and

Instant Ink service -- whether or not the service is in "Trial" mode -- requires that the printer be connected to the Internet (via Web Services) so the printer can be monitored for Page counts and ink supplies.

If the printer goes too long not being connected to the Internet (for ink service monitoring) OR if the service goes too long without payment being made, the contract will be terminated.
