Hi there
My parents have an HP Envy 4500 printer and it has never successfully worked for any length of time. I set it up initially and it worked perfectly, but every time their Mac is turned off, the printer seems to forget that it was ever installed and we have to go through the same process again. Here is a little example of what happened today when I tried to install it.
Firstly I wanted to start from a fresh so I restored the printer to factory settings. I then turned on the Mac (iMac, High Sierra, 10.13.6) and printer. Went on System preferences, found the printer, clicked on the 'plus' button and managed to connect it. It printed fine from the computer.
I then turned on my iPhone (6s) and managed to successfully print something from it.
I then turned on my mums iPad and managed to successfully print from it.
I then kept the computer on, turned the printer off and on again, turned phone and ipad off and on again, and was still able to print from both devices. However as soon as I turned the computer off, all hell broke loose!!! No more printing available from anything. Turned it off and on again, printer off and on again, phone and ipad off and on again, and nohting is being picked up. The computer is no longer picking up the printer, I can no longer print, and not sure what to do.
This is what happens all the time. Sometimes I will be able to set the printer to work again, and sometimes, like now, it will no longer pick it up.
I live two hours from my parents, so every time I visit I try and fix it again, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. They have no clue what to do, and despite my computer knowledge, I actually have hit a brick wall. it's come to the point where I am questioning if there has always been a fault with the printer, or if I can actually just resort to a wired approach and give up on printing from my phone and ipad.
Anyway, thanks for reading and if anyone can shed any light on this I would be eternally grateful.

A warm welcome to HP Community!
Do you have any Antivirus software installed on the computer?
Does the wireless on the printer blink once you loose the printer connection from those devices?
Do you have 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks enabled on your WiFi router?
What's the make and model of your WiFi router?
Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results. Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.
The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can access the menu by pressing the Option key(Alt) and clicking the Wireless icon.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I am currently not at my paretns house and will be back there in a few weeks at the earliest, so I wont be able to properly reply just yet. But wanted to thank you for your reply and I will get back to you ASAP.
I am able to answer a few questions though initially...
No Antivirus software on the computer
Wireless on the printer doesn't blink. It says it is connected wiht a solid light that doesnt flash.
When pressing Alt key and clicking on wireless icon, what additional information are you looking for?
Thanks so much and I look forward to trying to get to the bottom of this issue soon.
Regards, K.
