HP Color Laser MFP 178nw

The official webpage for firmware upgrades seems to be this: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laser-mfp-170-printer-series/24494365/mode...

It's called "Software and drivers for: HP Color Laser MFP 178nw".

But this webpage requires an OS and then tries to make me install software on my client.

I do not want this and I do not need this for a firmware upgrade.

This seems to be a direct link to a firmware file: https://ftp.ext.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/ColorLaserMFP178_179_V3.82.01.08.zip

(found via https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Searching-for-newest-Firmware/m-p/81690...)

It this still the current version for this model?

Hi,

There are different OS versions and the file changes for different operating systems.

For a Windows PC with Windows 7 or later you would need to use the latest firmware file below:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/ColorLaserMFP178_179_V3.82.01.08.zip

Just as a matter of clarification. This product is designed and marketed with home users in mind and for that market HP tries to make things as simple as possible. Hence they use a basically one click executable file to perform the update. I am not sure if it works with this model, but on many you can extract the actual firmware from the .exe file using 7Zip or other advanced archive program. The file should be a .ful file. Then copy that file to a USB stick and insert in the USB port on the computer. In some cases there will be a port on the back of the printer. You shut the printer off, insert the key in the back and then power the printer on. As stated, I have never tried this on this model so I cannot warrant that this works..

Dear Shlomi: That's the same link I posted. That doesn't answer my question: where can I find the official link to the most recent firmware ZIP (OS-independent) without having to search the forums?

Dear Repairatrooper: It's absolutely legitimate to offer client-software for popular OS. I have no issue with that.

But I don't understand why I can't find a link to the OS-independent ZIP version of the firmware.

I tried your suggestion to extract the OS-software.

But "HP_Color_Laser_MFP_178_179_Full_Software_and_Drivers_1.16.exe" (Win 10) is not a 7Zip, it's a "PE32 executable".

And "uld-hp_V1.00.39.12_00.15.tar.gz" (Linux) doesn't contain a firmware image.

My question stands.

It's now been two weeks. I got two replies (thanks), but unfortunately no answer to my question: Where can I find the official link to the most recent firmware ZIP (OS-independent) without having to search the forums?
