HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11
My DSL line, internet connection, took a direct lighting hit on July 11. My provider is not coming to fix until August 7. In the meantime I have legal papers that must be printed and sent via regular mail and papers to my cancer doctor. I have tried to move my printer from wireless to being connected with an ethernet cable. It will not print a job when I send to it. I can get the printer to print out the configuration page, but no jobs. I am desperate for help. How can I accomplish a direct connection?

Hi @Nonni44,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the urgency of your situation. Here's a step-by-step guide to connect your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 directly to your laptop using an Ethernet cable.

Check Ethernet Cable and Connections

  • Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both your printer and your laptop.

Assign a Static IP Address to the Printer

Print Configuration Page: Since you already printed the configuration page, look for the printer’s IP address. You might need this for manual configuration.

Access Printer Settings:

  • Press the Setup button on the printer’s control panel.
  • Navigate to Network > Wired Network > IPv4.
  • Set a static IP address if needed. This is typically done through a menu option like Manual IP Address. Enter a suitable IP address that is in the same range as your laptop's network but not conflicting with other devices (e.g., 192.168.1.100).

Configure the Printer on Your Laptop

Open Printer Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel on your laptop.
  • Select Devices and Printers or View devices and printers.

Add a Printer:

  • Click Add a printer.
  • Choose The printer that I want isn't listed.

Add a Printer Manually:

  • Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  • Click Next.
  • For Device type, select TCP/IP Device.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address that you set earlier.

Install Printer Driver:

  • The laptop should detect the printer and install the necessary drivers. If prompted, download the driver from HP’s official website.
  • If the printer driver is already installed, ensure it is set as the default printer.

Print a Test Page:

  • After the installation is complete, try printing a test page to ensure everything is working.

Troubleshoot

  • Check Firewall/Security Settings: Ensure that your laptop’s firewall or security software is not blocking the printer connection.
  • Network Conflicts: Verify that no other devices are using the same IP address as your printer.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, restarting both your laptop and the printer can resolve connection issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
