Using HPSMART to scan to email. it does the scan and then pops up and says no email is configured. Using Windows Live email. Yet, we can right click and send a file to email, so things are configured right for that. I downloaded the latest version of HPSMART. And yes we can scan from the printer directly to email. Would like to use the HPSMART option, that way we don't have to reload all the email addresses into the printer software.

Hi,
HP Smart is a Microsoft Store app, it only supports the Mail app (Also Microsoft Store app).
Scanning to an email client application such as Windows Mail or MS Outlook can only be done with HP Scan, provided with your Full Feature HP Software:
To provide you with the full feature software for your printer please clarify your EXACT printer model, there are several models as part of the M278 series.

MFP M278-M281 is the model number.
Interesting you only mention Windows Mail or MS Outlook. I am using Windows Live mail, and someone suggested that HP Smart does not work with Windows Live mail. Also someone suggested that Microsoft Account is not configured for email, but I checked and I do have it configured for email.

Download and follow HP Easy Start below:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/HPEasyStart_8_5_3738_10.exe
be sure to select the HP Full Feature Software and driver during the installation screen and install the software.
Once done click the printer icon on your desktop and then click on Scan a document or Photo under scan, select PDF as Email and that should allow using Windows Live Mail.
