@mileswrich, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're trying to print in greyscale using your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer on Windows 11, but it's still printing in color and consuming your color cartridges. Let's walk through the steps to ensure greyscale printing is correctly configured.

Open Printer Preferences:

  • Press Windows + S, type Printers & scanners, and select it.
  • Click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, then click Printing preferences.

Set to Greyscale:

  • In the Printing Preferences window, go to the Color or Advanced tab.
  • Look for an option like Print in Grayscale or Black Ink Only.
  • Select Black Ink Only (not just Greyscale, which may still use color inks for tone).

Apply and Save:

  • Click Apply and then OK to save the settings.

Try Printing Again:

  • Open your document and print it again to check if it now uses only black ink.

Additional Tips

  • Driver Update: Make sure your printer driver is up to date. You can download the latest full-feature driver from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  • HP Smart App: You can also manage print settings via the HP Smart app, which may offer more control over print modes. HP Smart

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
