I have a booklet created in Word using office 365. Duplex is set to flip over / flip pages on short edge. Orientation is Landscape. I wished the cover to be on different coloured paper. Paper / quality tab, special pages I clicked print pages on different paper then settings. Pages in document I put 1,2. Paper source I selected tray 1. Paper type I did not specify. I then clicked add then OK. I placed a piece of coloured paper in tray 1. When the document printed pages 1 and 2 were on the paper from tray 1 but all the pages were flipped on long edge resulting in half of them being upside down when I put the booklet together.
I printed the document without the special pages setting but still duplex set to flip over / flip pages on short edge. the pages flipped on the short edge and none were upside down when I folded the pages in half
Can you explain why the pages flipped on the wrong edge when I used the special pages settings?
As well as pages 1 and 2 should I have put pages 19 and 20 as these print on the same paper?
4 pages of the booklet are printed on one A4 page double sided.

Hi @churchadmin,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue that arises because adding a special page configuration for pages 1 and 2 can sometimes interfere with the printer’s default duplex settings. Here's a detailed explanation and guidance to achieve your intended result:
Why Pages Flipped on the Wrong Edge
When you set the cover pages (pages 1 and 2) to print from a different tray, the printer may treat this as a separate print job for those pages. The duplex setting applied to the main print job (flip on the short edge) might not transfer correctly to the special pages segment, causing those pages to flip on the long edge instead.
Additionally, this discrepancy can occur if the printer driver or application sends the duplex setting differently for pages coming from a different tray.
Should Pages 19 and 20 Be Included?
Yes, for booklet printing, pages 19 and 20 (the back cover in a 20-page booklet) are typically on the same sheet as pages 1 and 2 when folded. If you're printing the booklet manually or using special pages, you need to ensure that both the front and back covers (pages 1, 2, 19, and 20) are specified to use the special paper. Otherwise, the printer will use default settings for those other pages.
.Correct Procedure
Here’s how you can print your booklet with the cover on different colored paper, ensuring proper duplex alignment:
Setup Booklet Printing:
- In Word, ensure the document layout is correctly set for booklet printing:
- Go to Page Layout > Page Setup > Margins tab.
- Set the Multiple pages option to Book fold and adjust settings like orientation to Landscape.
Assign Cover Pages to Tray 1:
- Open the Print menu.
- Select your printer and go to Printer Properties.
- In the Paper/Quality or Special Pages tab:
- Choose Print pages on different paper.
- For "Pages in document," specify 1, 2, 19, 20.
- Assign these pages to Tray 1.
- If your printer requires it, set the paper type (e.g., "Thick" or "Colored Paper") for Tray 1.
Check Duplex Settings:
- Confirm that duplex is enabled and set to Flip on short edge. Ensure this setting applies globally to the entire print job, including special pages.
Load Paper:
- Load the colored paper for the cover in Tray 1 and plain paper in the other tray.
- Check that the printer recognizes the paper types correctly.
Test Print:
- Before printing the entire document, test with a smaller sample (e.g., pages 1, 2, 19, and 20) to ensure alignment and duplex settings work as expected.
Manual Adjustment in Word: If the special pages setting continues to disrupt the duplex settings, consider splitting the print job manually:
- Print pages 1, 2, 19, and 20 first on the colored paper with duplex set to flip on short edge.
- Print the remaining pages separately on plain paper, also with duplex set to flip on short edge.
- Assemble the booklet manually.
Printer Driver Update: Ensure your printer driver is up to date to prevent software issues from causing incorrect settings.
This approach should give you a properly aligned booklet with the cover on the desired paper. Let me know if you encounter further challenges!
