For the second or third time in the past 3 years, HP Scan Extended (which I use to get 2-sided scanning) fails with the above message. No software installs/uninstalls or updates took place. It just starts failing with the above message. And each time I've had to go through the whole process documented in this post from 13 years ago to get it working again.

2-4 hours of work, because it doesn't always work the first time I go through it.

Hi @Brian94582

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s frustrating, especially since you’ve had to go through this multiple times. Here are some steps that might help resolve the "HP Imaging Device Not Found" error on your HP OfficeJet 4650:

Step 1: Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Restart your computer and reconnect the printer.

Step 2: Check HP Scan Extended Settings

  • Open HP Scan Extended and go to SettingsScanner Selection.
  • Ensure your HP OfficeJet 4650 is selected as the default scanner.

Step 3: Verify Windows Services

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and ensure it’s set to Automatic.
  • Restart the service if needed.

Step 4: Reinstall HP Scan Extended

  • Uninstall HP Scan Extended from your computer.
  • Download and reinstall the latest version from HP’s support page.

Step 5: Update Printer Drivers

  • Open Device Manager and expand Imaging Devices.
  • Right-click your printer and select Update Driver.
  • Install any available updates.

Step 6: Reset the Printer

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to SetupPrinter MaintenanceRestore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset and allow the printer to restart.
