Hi @deb265,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer is not connecting to your computer, and HP Smart cannot find the printer, try these troubleshooting steps:
To assist you better:
- How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
- Do you have a dual-band router?
- If you have a dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
- Have you made any changes on your printer post that this issue raised and have you observed any light blinking on the display and error code?
1. Check Printer and Network Connection
- Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to the same WiFi network as your computer.
- Print a Network Configuration Report:
- On the printer's control panel, swipe down to open the dashboard, then tap the Wireless icon. From the Wireless menu, tap Network Settings > Print Network Configuration.
- Check if the printer's network status is Connected.
- Restart your printer, computer, and router to refresh the network connection.
2. Check for Printer on Your Network
- On your computer, open a web browser and type your printer’s IP address (from the Network Configuration Report) in the address bar. If the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens, it confirms that the printer is connected to the network.
3. Reinstall the Printer in HP Smart HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
- Open HP Smart, and click on the + button to add a new printer.
- If the printer doesn’t appear, click Set Up a New Printer and follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect your printer to WiFi.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your computer to help HP Smart detect the printer.
4. Check Firewall Settings
- Sometimes, the firewall or antivirus software might block the communication between your computer and printer. Temporarily disable your firewall and see if HP Smart detects the printer.
5. Uninstall and Reinstall HP Smart
- Uninstall HP Smart from your computer and then reinstall it from HP's official website. This ensures you have the latest version of the software.
6. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows) HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from HP's website. This tool can help identify and resolve common connection issues between your computer and printer.
