Mac computer says that the printer is unavailable. I can print from the printer (Test prints, instructions, etc.) but not from my computer. I am connected via USB. I can scan, just not print.

Hi @User18001,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the "Not Available" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus E-All-In-One Printer.
Check Printer Connection
- Ensure USB Connection: Verify that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your Mac. Try a different USB port on your Mac if available.
- Check Cable and Ports: Ensure that the USB cable and ports are not damaged. Try using a different USB cable if possible.
Restart Devices
- Restart Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart Mac: Restart your Mac to refresh the connection between the devices.
Check Printer Status on Mac
- Open Printers & Scanners: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select Printer: Ensure that your HP Officejet Pro 8600 is listed. If it shows as offline or unavailable, try the following:
- Right-click on the printer and select Reset printing system....
- Add the printer again by clicking the + button and selecting your printer from the list.
Update Printer Drivers
- Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website.
- Search for Drivers: Enter your printer model and download the latest drivers and software for macOS.
- Install Drivers: Follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers. Restart your Mac after installation.
Reset Printing System
- Open Printers & Scanners: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Reset System: Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system....
- Re-add Printer: After resetting, click the + button to add your printer again.

Check Printer Firmware
- Update Firmware: Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. You can update the firmware via the printer’s control panel or through the HP Support website.
Test Print
- Print a Document: Try printing a test document from your Mac to check if the issue is resolved.
Additional Troubleshooting
- Check Print Queue: Make sure there are no stuck print jobs in the print queue. Open Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Open Print Queue. Cancel any pending jobs and try printing again.
- Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the printer is set as the default printer in your Mac's print settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
