Hi @brucesmob
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your printer is having trouble connecting to the network, possibly due to an issue with its DNS (Domain Name System) or default gateway settings. This can prevent the printer from communicating with the server, and it’s typically related to either the Wi-Fi network configuration or the network settings on the printer itself.
Let’s go through some steps to troubleshoot and fix this issue.
1. Check Printer Network Settings
First, we need to make sure that your printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network and has the correct network settings (such as DNS and gateway).
a. Print a Network Configuration Page
- On the printer's control panel, go to the Network Settings or Wi-Fi settings (this depends on your printer model).
- Look for an option to Print Network Configuration or Network Report.
- This page will include information like the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings.
- Check if the printer has a valid IP address and if the gateway is set correctly.
b. Review DNS and Gateway Settings
- If the DNS and gateway are incorrect or missing, the printer won’t be able to communicate with external servers.
- Default Gateway: This should match the gateway IP address of your router (often something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
- DNS: The DNS server settings should either be automatic or set to a known public DNS server. Some common DNS servers are:
- Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
- Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1
- OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
If the printer has incorrect or missing DNS information, you'll need to manually set it. You can do this from the printer’s Network Settings menu.
2. Check Router and Network Settings
Sometimes the problem could be with your Wi-Fi router or network settings.
a. Ensure Your Printer is Connected to the Right Network
- Make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer or other devices.
- You can check this by looking at the Wi-Fi status or Network Configuration page from your printer’s control panel.
b. Reboot Router and Printer
- Power cycle the router: Unplug the router for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to fully reboot.
- Power cycle the printer: Turn it off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
- After both the router and printer have rebooted, check if the printer can connect to the server again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
