You may need to reset the printer.  if the front panel reset does not work then do the hidden menu reset

Another reset (actually two) are described here.

This video shows how to connect to the modem or router

I failed to mention that my wife can print from her I pad but it is my desktop that cannot print.

The software link you sent will not download even though I unhooked the firewall on McAfee and Microsoft Defender

Something strange here.  You should use either McAfee or Defender and never both of them.

That is true for window 11 and 10, I do not know about 7 or 8

I uninstalled McAfee when I discovered it was phoning home on startup to non-existent servers and taking 30 second timeouts before it realized its server was not answering.  Possibly that problem has been fixed as it was several years ago.

If both antivirus apps are running concurrently, the download can be scanned by one antivirus and the other antivirus will report it is unable to access the file and will then mark it as a problem file not to be used.

Make sure it is downloaded in a folder that it can be installed from.  Usually c:\swsetup or c:\users\YourID\downloads

Some folders in a windows system are not privileged enough to install drivers.

Possibly your wife is connecting to the printer using WiFi direct and you are attempting to connect using a router path.

Use whatever connection method your wife has.

If using edge to download then switch to firefox for the download or vice-versa.  Chrome and Edge are both based on chromium unlike firefix.

If neither one of the browsers can download the app then there is an OS problem of some type.

Look in the windows event log for errors.  If you see errors then

1 - run the disk cleanup to remove old downloads and updates

2 - run the system file checker

SFC and DISM are both tools that scan and repair corrupted system files. However, SFC uses a cached version of the files, while DISM uses the internet to download and fix the files.

Try the SFC first and if that gives a message that it cannot fix the problem then try the DISM tool.

Let me know if a problem.

I did everything mentioned and I still get Printer off line.  HP Smart cannot resolve the problem.  Do I get online help with Microsoft for the OS

So the  download worked?

if the driver got downloaded that solved the download problem.  You just need to connect over WiFi now.  Is that correct?

i assume the printer still works for your wife.  Does your wife use WIFi direct?  If so, do not reset the printer:  Just try to connect.  Try WiFi direct  a video is here. I assume you have a smart phone or a laptop with bluetooth

Page 31 of the users manual shows how to get a WIFI report which will show how the printer is connected.

If the printer is connected to the router there is no need to use HP Smart as it is already connected.  You just need to have your PC search for the printer using "add a device"

BeemerBiker_0-1716107594966.png

Here is the important stuff from a typical printer report. The password shown in WiFi can be the printers PIN or the modem's password depending on how you connected to the modem. The printer can have two bands but the only one that is connected will show up.

LANSTATUSIP addressSSIDPassword
WiFienabled192.168.1.15ATT-ARRIS-2 .4GuessAgain
WiFi-directenabled192.168.23.1DIRECT-WHATEVERBadGuess
Wireddisabled
USBdisabled

If wifi direct is enabled you can connect to the printer using the SSID and the Password that is printed.by the report.

Note that you cannot connect using WiFi direct if your desktop system does not have WiFi.  What PC are you trying to print from?
