HP Officejet Pro 8620
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone,

I have recently bought the HP Officejet Pro 8620 and I am having problems connecting it with my computer.

I have used the setup wizard to connect the printer to my university's network/WiFi and when it is finished, the blue connectivity light stays a solid blue and the screen says it is connected, which is great. However, when I use the HP Officejet Pro 8620 instillation/computer connection program, I always get the message,

"- The IP address entered is either incorrect, or it is from a different wireless network that has the same name as your network. Please confirm that your printer actually has this IP address or enter the correct address below and click Search. Also confirm that you wireless network name is unique."

I have made sure that the IP listed on the printer is copied 100% exactly the same with the dots and the message still appears and my printer is unable to connect with my computer. As another option, it says I can use the hostname to find the printer as well. However, the same thing occurs. I'll type the hostname number by number and letter by letter and it still cannot find my printer. Futhermore, there is only 1 network name so I know I'm tapping the right one. Being a student, it is very important that I get things printed off so it is vital for me to solve this problem. Also, I spent a lot of money on it so I need it to work properly.

It should be easy to connect being that it gives me all of the necessary information right infront of me, but like I said, it has not been an easy nor fun experience. I don’t really know how IP addresses work but I have tried using every single one that I can find that is relevent. As of now, I have to save everything as a PDF on my computer, email myself the desired printing documents, download them on my Galaxy Note 4, connect my phone with the printer using the HP Wireless Direct feature on the Officejet and then I can finally print my things. Yes, it works that way but it is such a hassle and I shouldn’t have to do that. I do realize that I can go buy a USB connecting cable to connect my printer to my computer but I don't want to have to mount the 2 everytime I would like to print.

(Also something to note, since I am using a university's WiFi, I do not have access to the router of course so I don't know if that's a contributing factor in why things aren't working).

If anyone has any suggestions/advice/answers on the issue at hand, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello @Plz_Help

Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand that you are having a problem connecting your computer and your printer via the university's Wifi. I would like to help.

The one thing that really jumps out is that you are using the universities network. This can cause a lot of problems.

Question: When you connect your computer or Note 4 to the network, does a window pop up saying you need to agree to the terms of service? If so this would defiantly prevent the printer from being properly connected to the network.

If you had access to the router I would recommend checking the network connection by typing the printers IP address into a web browser. If you can access the printers Embedded Web Server, then the connection is fine. If you can't then you should reset the router. Obviously you can't do this.

Also, here is something to consider: If the printer does get successfully put onto the network, everyone else on the network will have access to your printer.

A USB connection will be the most reliable and secure way to go. Another thing, why send the print jobs from your Note 4? Why not save the PDF's and connect the computer to the printers wireless direct network? This way you can print from your computer.

Sorry I can't give you a 'do this and it will work' solution. You would have to convince the universities IT department to get things connected.

Hello,

Thanks for replying so quick! I've tried using the HP Wireless Direct to print right from my computer using the HP iO Printer Remote app, however, everything goes well until the printing screen is pulled up and my officejet isn't on the list and I've already connected it through the WiFi settings. When I try to add my printer, it says "Status unavailable."

Oh well, I can't do much about it until I bring it home to get it hooked up to our home WiFi. After that, everything should be saved and it will be set as my default printer. I will take your advice and go buy a USB adapter ASAP so that I can use my computer to print. Thanks again for all the help/advice. It is greatly appreciated!

So it looks like if you connect your printer via a wired connection, you would be OK.

I also have an HP 8620, and I would like to connect it via wired connection to my computer.  However, all I see is how to connect it wirelessly, either directly to my computer or via the network.  I do not see how to connect it via a wired connection.  How do you connect it wired?

Thanks
