HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I am using HP Smart to add an existing printer on my home network to my new laptop.  It scans the network and finds the printer and shows it as Online.  When I click it to add it, it says "Select a different printer.  HP OfficeJet 4650 series must be turned on to add it to HP Smart.  Once the printer is turned on, tap OK to refresh, and then select the printer again."

I hit OK, it repeats the scan finds the printer again.  I select it and get the same error message.  I have power cycled my laptop, the printer, and my router.  Same results.

Additional info:

  • My printer is running firmware version CUP1FN2022AR which looks to be the current one (product page shows it as version 2022A).
  • I can view the printer and print to it from other devices on the network using HP Smart on my phone or other computer.
  • I tried using the HP doctor app and it cannot even find the printer.

Hi @EricW61,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with printing wirelessly from one of your device to the printer.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, I'm here to help you today.

Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.

A) Perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, uninstall the printer software by following the steps from this link and restart the devices.

D) Install the printer software by clicking on the link again and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Note: Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

I got it working, but not by doing this.  The main problem seemed to be that the printer was set to manual IP address.  I discovered this when trying to run several of the suggested firmware update methods and always getting an error that it could not contact the server.  The web access test results confirmed it could not access the gateway and suggested changing the IP address type from manual to automatic.  I did so and was then able to successfully check for updates (it was already up to date) and to add the printer, although I had to manually enter the printer's IP address to do so.

Thanks for the reply.  Although this may not have been the solution, in trying to implement it I found the problem.  I think I set it to manual IP a long time ago due to IP address conflicts on an old system.  I've had this printer for 6 years now and it is still going strong.
