I receive a 79 Service Error message whenever the printer connects to my network and it continuously crashes. This happens when the printer connects to the network either wirelessly or through an ethernet cable. Based on a few posts, I have disabled IPv6 Network Services and it doesn't solve the problem. The printer is also on the latest firmware from October 2024 Not sure what to do! Help!

Hi @tomtuch,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "79 Service Error" on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw can be quite frustrating, especially if it leads to the printer continuously crashing when connected to your network. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve this issue.
Reset the Printer: Power off the printer, disconnect it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then reconnect and power it back on.
Update Firmware: Ensure that your printer is running the latest firmware. Since you've mentioned it is up to date as of October 2024, this step may already be covered.
Check Network Configuration:
- Disable IPv6: You've already done this, which is a good first step. Make sure that any settings related to IPv6 are fully disabled.
- IP Address Conflict: Check if there’s another device on your network using the same IP address as the printer. You can assign a static IP address to the printer to avoid conflicts.
Reinstall Printer Drivers: Sometimes, corrupted drivers can cause issues. Uninstall the existing drivers from your computer and reinstall them from the HP support website.
Network Connection:
- Try connecting the printer using a different Ethernet cable or switch to a different port on your router.
- If you're using Wi-Fi, consider moving the printer closer to the router to improve the connection or try a wired connection temporarily.
Check for External Interference: Ensure that there are no devices nearby that could cause interference with the printer's network connection.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I am using Macs on the network. I have done the power cycling, latest firmware update, disabled IPv6, turned off wifi and network connectivity only through ethernet.
How do you assign a static ip address to the printer? I haven't tried that yet!
Thanks

Hi @tomtuch,
Thank you for your response,
Here’s how to assign a static IP address to your printer and additional advanced troubleshooting steps you can take.
Assigning a Static IP Address
Access the Printer’s Control Panel:
- On the printer's home screen, navigate to Network or Setup (depending on your model).
- Select Network Setup or Wireless Settings.
Find the Current IP Address:
- Go to View Network Settings to see the current IP address and confirm it is set to DHCP.
Change the IP Address Setting:
- Select TCP/IP or IP Address.
- Change the IP address setting from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual.
Assign the Static IP:
- Enter the desired static IP address. Choose an address outside of the DHCP range of your router to avoid conflicts (you can check your router settings for the DHCP range).
- Also enter the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0), and gateway (your router’s IP address).
Save and Exit:
- Save the settings and exit the menu. The printer may restart to apply the new settings.
Update Printer Settings on Mac:
- On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Remove the printer if it is still listed with the old IP address, then click Add Printer.
- Choose your printer from the list and ensure you select the option with the new static IP.
Advanced Troubleshooting Steps
Check Event Logs:
- Access the printer's event logs through the control panel or web interface. Look for any specific errors that may provide more context for the 79 Service Error.
Factory Reset:
- As a last resort, consider performing a factory reset on the printer. This will erase all settings, including network configurations, so make sure to note down any custom settings first.

Reinstall Printer Firmware:
- If the firmware update was recent, consider reinstalling the same firmware version to rule out any corruption.
Network Environment:
- Ensure that your router's firmware is also up to date.
- Check for any QoS (Quality of Service) settings in your router that might prioritize traffic for specific devices and inadvertently affect the printer.
USB Connection:
- If possible, temporarily connect the printer directly to a computer via USB to rule out network-related issues.
Check Power Supply:
- Ensure that the printer is plugged into a surge protector or UPS to avoid power interruptions, which can lead to error messages.
By following these steps, you should be able to assign a static IP address to your printer and hopefully resolve the 79 Service Error.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I assigned a static IP address and the printer still continuously crashes with the 79 Service Error message. I’m the printer is stable whenever it is off the network. I took it off network and will now use the HP direct print service where the printer creates its own WiFi network. That worked but is a pain as one needs to switch WiFi network when printing.

Hi @tomtuch,
Thank you for your response,
Since you've already tried several basic troubleshooting steps and found that the printer is stable when off the network, here are some advanced troubleshooting steps to consider.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Check for Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is the latest version. You can usually find updates on the manufacturer's website or through the printer's control panel.
- Reinstall Firmware: If the error started after a firmware update, try reinstalling the previous firmware version if possible. This can help if the new update caused instability.
Network Configuration:
- Change DNS Settings: Consider changing the DNS settings on the printer. Use a public DNS like Google’s (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to see if it resolves the issue.
- Network Isolation: If the printer is part of a larger network, try isolating it from other devices temporarily to see if a specific device is causing the conflict.
Check Printer Logs:
- Access Event Logs: Use the printer's web interface (by entering the static IP address in a web browser) to check for error logs or event notifications that can provide more details on what triggers the 79 Service Error.
Power Cycle:
- Hard Reset: Power down the printer, unplug it from the wall for at least 10 minutes, and then plug it back in. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
Network Settings Review:
- QoS Settings: Review your router’s QoS settings to ensure that the printer is not being deprioritized.
- Port Configuration: Make sure the necessary ports for the printer's communication are open (usually TCP port 9100 for IP printing).
Environmental Factors:
- Interference: If using Wi-Fi, check for interference from other devices (microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) that could be disrupting the signal.
- Signal Strength: If using Wi-Fi, ensure the printer is within range of the router. Consider moving it closer or using Wi-Fi extenders if needed.
Test USB Connection:
- Direct Connection: If feasible, connect the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable to bypass network issues. See if it operates without errors this way.

Check Power Supply and Surge Protection:
- Power Source: Make sure the printer is connected to a reliable power source. Avoid using cheap surge protectors; a good UPS can help protect against power fluctuations.
Factory Reset:
- Perform Factory Reset: As a last resort, reset the printer to factory settings. Make sure to back up your configurations, as this will clear all settings.
Note
Switching to HP's direct print service may help temporarily, but it's inconvenient for regular use. Therefore, addressing the underlying network or configuration issues is crucial for a long-term solution.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially resolve the 79 Service Error with your printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
