HP LaserJet MFP M234sdne Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Printer wont fully turn on light flashes and has weird message of circle and r d.

Cannot access the EWS or network.  Tried usual stuff such as unplugging, change network cables, restarted router.

Can't find any info on how to hard reset these or recover.

Hi @Andrea7680,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this can be — let’s work through this together. You’re using the HP LaserJet MFP M234sdne and encountering a boot issue where the printer flashes a circle and “r d” on the screen, won’t fully power on, and can’t be accessed via network or EWS.

1. Power Cycle the Printer (Hard Reset)

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord and disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Turn the printer back on.

2. Check for Error Code Meaning

According to HP’s official guide, the “Er” followed by a code (like Er/20, Er/08, etc.) indicates specific hardware or toner-related issues. However, your description of a circle and "rd" may suggest a firmware boot loop or network-related error.

3. Try a Firmware Recovery (if accessible)

If the printer is stuck and you cannot access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Download the HP Printer Firmware Update Utility.
  • Connect the printer via USB to your Windows 11 PC.
  • Run the utility and see if it detects the printer and offers a firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello,

I've tried all these solutions before posting.  My guess is a firmware boot loop.  Also tried the HP Printer Firmware Update Utility as I had a USB cable from an older printer and it seemed to send down the firmware but didn't do more than that can't connect to the printer in anyway its not booting up to a point any of the buttons work so not able to communicate with it.
