Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

Envy 5540
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Running Mac OS Monterey-- Although I have connected my HP Envy 5540 Printer to my WiFi Network successfully, since I installed the new Mac OS (12.0.1), the printer appears "offline", although it is on and connected.  I have already followed your troubleshooting guide, to no avail.  The Wireless Network Test gives the following Attention point:

" More than one access point/wireless router has been found that matched your wireless network name (SSID).  If this is not intended your HP printer may connect to the wrong wireless network.  To avoid this, change your wireless network name (SSID) to be unique.  If you change your network name, you will need to configure the SSID on all wireless devices to match your new network SSID"

As far as I know, I only have one router and an extender.  Until Mac OS 12.0 was released, I had no problems.  What's going on, and  how do I fix it.  With the printer like this, I can't print or scan.  I use the printer every day, and without it,  my workflow is paralyzed.  Time to buy an Epson?

@DocNikon, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand the printer is offline and you are not able to print. Are you using the HP Smart app to print? Let us try these steps:

  • How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
  • Restart the router, the printer, and the Mac
  • Make sure the printer and the Mac are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
  • Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.

Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

  • This printer supports WPA encryption, check if the router is on the same encryption method. If using WEP or WPA-PSK+FT change it to WPA-PSK
  • If you have an extender, make sure it is setup in bridge mode.

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. Open a new Terminal window (it's located in Applications > Utilities, or you can just start typing it in Spotlight).
  3. Enter “ping” followed by the IP address of the printer.
  4. Press Return. Press ctrl C after 10 pings
  5. There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

I tried your fix.  It worked.  Powered off the printer (D/C'd cord), waited 10 sec.  Turned off the MacBookPro.

Plugged the printer back in.  Powered off the router for 10 sec.  Turned the Mac back on.  Performed the ping test for 16 pings:  0% packed loss (see below).  Printed directly from MS Word.  I like printing directly from applications, not using HP Smart.  Did a scanner test, worked fine.  Thanks for your help.

Results of ping test:

Last login: Mon Jan 31 14:50:20 on console

ping statistics ---
16 packets transmitted, 16 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 3.254/10.304/20.490/4.736 ms

I would note that this HP Envy 5540 All in one worked perfectly with my WIFI until Apple released OS 12.0.1

I shudder at the prospect of Mac OS 13.0.kludge.  It would be extremely helpful to have updated drivers tested and ready for release at the launch of the new OS.

Best wishes,
