HP OfficeJet Pro 8124e All-in-One Printer

These printers seem to be very problematic, especially if you have more than one on a network.  They have never worked properly since they were bought.  They were all bought and installed at the same time.  They are all connected to the company network through ethernet with static IP addresses.

Original issue - with WSD enabled all of the printers would print one job and then complain that there was no paper.  I disabled Printer WSD, but kept discovery and scan WSD on otherwise they will not scan and the scanner software won't even install.  They worked, for a while.

After an automatic firmware update all printers stopped working.  I can't remember them showing any errors, but we could not print.  I started experimenting and changed the IP addresses from static to DHCP.  All of the printers changed the setting to auto IP which showed they were unable to see the DHCP server in the router.  I then changed the link speed from auto to 100MB full and DHCP worked.  I then set set static IP addresses back up and all three printers worked again.

After another automatic firmware update the printers yet again stopped printing.  They kept flashing up no internet connection and the blue wireless LEDs kept flashing despite WiFI and direct WiFi being disabled.  I changed the static IP addresses to DHCP and again had the same problem as previous where the printers couldn't see the DHCP server and reverted to auto IP.  Experimenting with the link settings again I found that I had to change from 100MB full to 100MB half.  I was able to set static IP addresses again and the printers printed.

Now I am having problems with the scanner software as that has now has been updated.  It has an issue when you try and install more than one scanner.  You do not seem to be able to properly select the scanner that you want to use.  To make things worse, the scanner software displays the model name of the printer and not the name I have given it so it displays 3 x the same thing meaning that you have no idea which scanner you are actually using.

The printers are now trying to download firmware again, but fail every time.  I have also tried to download the software manually both by using the screen on the printers and by using the Windows software.  Using the screen I get an error F0.01.01.02.  This is the same on all 3 printers.  Using the Windows software, I eventually get the error The upgrade failed on X printers.  Turn these printers off, then on again, and retry the update.  The current firmware version is 6.23.3.71-202502131608 on all three printers.

The firmware is clearly very buggy and the scanner software too.

What I want is for all 3 printers to print and scan properly with WSD completely disabled using static IP addresses.  The scanning software needs updating so that it will work just with an IP address and no WSD if that's what you want.

I should add that the software I have installed on several PCs is the basic printer driver and the basic scanner software.  All the automated software just gave me even more problems.  Some of the PCs are Windows 10 and some are Windows 11,

I hope somebody can help.

Hi @Chaz75,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Ethernet issues with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8124e!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Disable WSD and Manage Discovery Settings:

  • Since disabling WSD resolved the initial paper error, ensure WSD remains disabled. Use standard TCP/IP port configuration for printer connectivity.

Verify Static IP Configuration:

  • Double-check that each printer has a unique static IP address. This helps in avoiding IP conflicts which can cause connectivity issues.

Check Network Configuration:

  • Ensure that the network settings (gateway, subnet mask, DNS servers) are correctly configured for each printer according to your company's network configuration.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Visit the HP website to ensure that all printers have the latest firmware updates. Firmware updates offer fixes for known issues and improve network compatibility.

Ethernet Cable and Switch Check:

  • Inspect the Ethernet cables for any signs of damage and replace them if needed. Additionally, verify that the network switch ports are configured correctly and functioning properly.

Printer Settings and Network Restart:

  • Restart each printer and verify settings again. Also, restart network devices like routers and switches to refresh connections.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool for additional diagnostics. It can help identify and resolve connectivity issues.

Review Printer Logs:

  • Access printer logs from the embedded web server to see if there are any recurrent error messages that could highlight underlying problems.

Consult IT for Network Traffic:

  • If problems persist, there may be issues with network traffic or configurations that require IT intervention, particularly if network congestion or restrictions are suspected.

I hope this helps.
