Hello HP Community. I have an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw and an I-Mac with Sonoma software version 14.6.1. The printer is wireless and the Mac and printer have been on the same network for 4 years. Yesterday when going to print we immediately get the "pause" function for printing. I tried everything I can think of.....made sure ink not low, no paper jams, turned off and disconnected printer from network and reset. I turned off printer/computer and disconnected wireless network from both. In the Mac I went into systems settings and removed the printer and reinstalled printer with same result. I also tried to hard wire printer into network, but get same result. Any other recommendations? Could there have been a software update with Apple or HP that is causing this? It's out of the blue/random

Hi @Tony_Gard ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

That is an excellent description and a great diagnosis. It is greatly appreciated.

I understand how frustrating it is to encounter issues like this, especially after years of seamless operation. Let’s address your printing issue step by step.

  • When the printer goes into "pause," do you see any specific error message on the Mac or the printer's control panel?
  • Are you using the default AirPrint driver, or did you install an HP-specific driver for the printer?
  • Did this issue occur after a macOS update, or has the HP printer firmware recently been updated?

Reset the Printing System on the Mac:

  • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add the printer by clicking the + button and selecting it from the list. If possible, choose AirPrint as the driver option.

Check for macOS and Printer Driver Updates:

  • Ensure your Mac is running the latest version of Sonoma (14.6.1).
  • Visit the HP website to confirm you have the latest printer firmware or driver updates compatible with macOS Sonoma. You may need the HP Easy Start tool for assistance.

Test Connectivity with a Direct USB Connection:

  • Temporarily connect the printer to the Mac using a USB cable.
  • Add the printer via System Settings and test printing directly. This will help identify if the issue is network-related.

Verify Printer Queue and Clear Jobs:

  • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners and select the printer.
  • Click Open Print Queue and check for any stuck print jobs. Cancel all jobs, and try printing a new document.

Check for Conflicting or Corrupted Drivers:

  • Go to Library > Printers on your Mac and look for any HP-specific files.
  • Remove any old HP printer drivers by deleting the HP folder.
  • Reinstall the printer using AirPrint, which is typically more stable with newer macOS versions.

If the issue persists, it could be due to a compatibility issue between macOS Sonoma and the HP printer firmware.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

The only tactic I had not tried before sending note was the "Check for Conflicting or Corrupted Driver". I followed that step. In the meantime I hardwired the printer to router and have had success (for now).

hello,

I have the exact same problem, however after following the instruction it didn't resolve the issue.

I do not know how to install the printer using AirPrint, could you please help? thank you.

I successfully installed with AirPrint (i think, at least this is shown in the settings>printer). Unfortunately, it still does the same: when I print from my Mac, it goes immediately on pause.

Before all these actions I could still print using my iPhone (AirPrint), and I still can. The printer itself is working fine, just not from my Mac. Please help.

I noticed I can print from my mobile devices but when try to print from Mac it pauses like you say.  I went directly to printer on network from my Mac and was able to print test sheet from network but when try from any app on Mac will send and then pause.  So this feels like some sw issue.  I had been using printer fine for 5 years no prob.

Hi BootsBijou,

It has been very frustrating to not been able to find much help here. So I really wanted to help others like you : I fond the solution in another forum.

The problem is the expiry of the certificate. Please follow these instructions:

1) go to the printer's web graphical interface from a browser (fine the IP from the pinter display if you don't know it)

2) go to "Networking" tab

3) on the left menu, under "Security", go to "Certificate"

(*) here if you clic on "View" you should see the certificate specs and notice that it has expired (date in early 2025)

4) under "Printer Certificate Options", select "Create a New Self-Signed Certificate" and clic Next.

Please note that by default it will create a 1 year certificate, if you type 3650 days, you will get a 10 years certificate.

May the Force be with you 😉
