My HP4650 suddenly stopped printing from my PC Printer displays "printing", but then display immediately reverts to "printing complete" when in fact nothing has printed. I have restarted router, computer, and printer, with no improvement. My partner CAN print from his laptop, and I can also print from my laptop. How do I reset to be able to print from my PC?

Hi @Barb369
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 4650 is having a communication issue with your PC. Since it works fine with other devices, the problem is likely specific to your PC.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Remove and Reinstall the Printer
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP OfficeJet 4650 and click Remove Device.
- Restart your PC.
- Reinstall the printer by clicking Add a Printer or Scanner and following the prompts.
2. Update Printer Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your printer model compatible with Windows 11.
- Install the drivers and restart your PC.
3. Check Default Printer Settings
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Ensure your HP OfficeJet 4650 is set as the default printer.
4. Clear Print Queue
- Open the Print Queue by clicking on the printer icon in the system tray.
- Cancel all pending print jobs and try printing a new document.
5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
6. Check Firewall or Antivirus Settings
- Ensure your firewall or antivirus software isn’t blocking the printer. Add the printer as an exception in your security software.
7. Test with Another Application
- Try printing from a different application (e.g., Word, Notepad) to see if the issue is specific to one program.

Thanks for the response Hawks_Eye. Turns out that at some point along the way, an additional printer name was added to my list of options for printers (same printer, just a different name, preceded by "scan only"). When I select that printer, I can print from my PC. Any ideas why a new printer would have suddenly appeared?

Hi @Barb369,
Thank you for the response:
When Windows auto-detects a printer (especially an HP all-in-one model like your 4650), it sometimes:
Installs multiple entries, like one for printing, and one for scanning only
Or assigns a different driver profile (like a Web Services, WSD, or fax-only version)
Or Windows Update grabs a generic driver and adds it alongside your original one
It’s like your PC said, “Hmm, I think this printer might have another side to it,” and then just duplicated it without checking in with you first. 🙄
To make things less confusing and avoid future misprints:
Set the Working Printer as Default
Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners
Click on the one that actually prints → Click Manage → Then Set as default
Remove the Duplicate One
In the same menu, find the “Scan Only” or unresponsive version
Click it → Remove device
(That won’t remove scanning functionality, you’ll still be able to scan using the HP Smart app or Windows Scan.)
Rename for Clarity (Optional)
If you ever get a duplicate again, you can rename the working one to something like:
“HP 4650 - Works!”
Just click Manage > Printer Properties > General tab and rename it.
I hope this helps.
