HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently got a different wi-fi network and I cannot reconnect my printer to my new wi-fi. I had it connected to my old wi-fi, but cannot seem to figure out how to get it connected to my new network. I tried doing anything in the HP Smart app (since i previously had it setup on there) on my computer but all the settings are greyed out so I cannot use those. When I try to press the wi-fi button on the printer, I am getting Er/61 but I cannot locate what that means.

@SJacobs14, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If you've recently changed your Wi-Fi network and are having trouble reconnecting your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe printer, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get back online:

Step 1: Restore Wi-Fi Setup Mode

Since your printer doesn’t have a touchscreen, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the printer is powered on.
  2. Press the Cancel button to ready the printer.
  3. Press and hold the Wireless button until the Attention light starts blinking.
  4. Wait about 60 seconds – the Wireless light should blink blue, indicating the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode.

Step 2: Reconnect Using HP Smart App

Once the printer is in setup mode:

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your Windows 11 PC.
  2. Click “+ Add Printer” or “Set up a new printer”.
  3. The app should detect your printer in setup mode.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to connect it to your new Wi-Fi network.

If the app shows greyed-out settings, make sure:

  • You're signed in with the same HP account used during initial setup.
  • The printer is in setup mode (blinking blue light).
  • Your PC is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer on.

About Error Code Er/61

The Er/61 error usually means the printer is having trouble connecting to the network. Restoring Wi-Fi setup mode (as above) typically resolves this.
