Hi there

I'm going through the agonising process of attempting to connect my old wireless HP printer to a new WiFi network and password.

Unfortunately, the HP smart app is insanely non-intuitive.

Does anyone have any ideas? If I click on my printer in the app or on 'add' new printer or use diagnose and fix with the printer turned on, the HP Smart App simply refuses to find the printer. It's hopeless, absolutely hopeless - a piece of junk.

The virtual assistant can't help, either.

Definitely the last time I'm buying anything from HP but if anyone could help me get some life out of this printer, I'd be v grateful.

Many thanks

HN24

Hi @HelpNeeded24 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand and I'm sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with your HP printer and the HP Smart App. Connecting an old wireless printer to a new Wi-Fi network can indeed be a challenging task, especially if the printer and the app aren't cooperating as expected.

Here are some general steps you can try to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

  • Manual Setup Mode: Many HP printers have a manual setup mode where you can directly connect to the printer's Wi-Fi network using your computer or mobile device. Check your printer's manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to do this.
  • Reset Network Settings: You can try resetting the printer's network settings to clear out any old network configurations. This usually involves pressing a combination of buttons on the printer's control panel. Again, refer to your printer's manual or HP's support website for specific instructions.
  • HP Smart App Troubleshooting: If the HP Smart App isn't detecting your printer, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Sometimes, a fresh installation can resolve software glitches. Additionally, make sure that your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that you want to connect your printer to.
  • Direct Connection: Some printers allow you to connect directly to your computer via USB cable for initial setup. You can use this method to configure the printer's Wi-Fi settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The issue is likely with your router. If new it is going to be a 5Ghz router and while the printer will attempt to connect it is not compatible. You need to configure the 2.Ghz channel of the router with a unique SSID and only allow the printer to connect to that SSID.
