HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Constantly getting "The printer is offline" error message when trying to print from Edge browser on my two Macs (M2 Mac-mini and MacBook Air M1).

Only problem is the printer is NOT offline.  I can print from my iPhone, Mac mini, and MacBook Air easily using the HP Smart App.  I have reinstalled the printer driver and it works for a short period of time (like one day) then reverts to the same error message.

I changed the frequency on the printer to 5GHz as so far, I have not had any issues in three days.

Hi @JustMe14,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're dealing with a persistent issue where your HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e shows as "offline" when printing from the Edge browser, even though it's working fine with other devices and apps. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this:

Update Printer Drivers and Firmware:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues.
  • Check for any available firmware updates for your printer and apply them if available.

Reset Printing System:

  • On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the list of printers and select Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add your printer by clicking the + button and follow the setup instructions.

Check Printer Status and Connectivity:

  • Make sure your printer is properly connected to the network and has a stable connection. Sometimes, network issues can cause intermittent offline status.

Edge Browser Settings:

  • Clear the browser cache and cookies. Sometimes, browser-specific issues can cause printing problems.
  • Try printing from a different browser (like Safari or Chrome) to see if the issue is isolated to Edge.

Printer Configuration in macOS:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and make sure it is set as the default printer.
  • Click on Options & Supplies > Utility > Open Printer Utility and check if there are any specific settings related to connectivity or offline status.

Network Settings:

  • Ensure that your Mac and printer are on the same network. Double-check the network settings on both devices.

HP Smart App Configuration:

  • Since the HP Smart App works but the Edge browser does not, there may be a conflict or setting in the app that is causing the issue. Make sure the HP Smart App is up to date and correctly configured.

Reinstall Printer:

  • Remove the printer from your list of printers and reinstall it. This can sometimes clear up any residual settings causing the issue.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to respond.

How can I tell what version of my driver is and where can I get the most current version?  I tried a search here on www.hp.com but only come up with a Firmware Updater download.  Also, do I need to install this firmware download tool if my printer has the capability to check. firmware updates on its own?

Thanks
