CORRECTION:

It actually works fine with the PSC 2170 Series. It's just the PSC 1215 Series that gives problems...

I am pleased to report that my query sent to the HP MD has prompted a response - from HP customer support.

In it, they outline how to set up the 1215 in W7 etc etc... all the stuff i have done. They acknowledge the limited functionality and tell me the unit is no longer under warranty (obvious!) and is no longer supported.

It is this last point that I have now challenged:

"My concern is that HP has not addressed this limited functionality and I do not understand why. In a world where everyone is increasingly concerned to use resources widely, this failure means that my excellent HP printer - which was only made in 2007 - cannot be used efficiently as I am unable to specify the quality of print I want. This means that every print run, even draft printing, is using maximum ink. (Eventually, it will mean that I may have to bin a perfectly good machine!).
I cannot believe that it is beyond the wit of HP to solve this relatively small problem, and at minimal cost - and thus ensure 100% customer satisfaction.
I originally sent my query to the MD of HP Europe as mine is not a technical issue but one of corporate policy. It would be good if you could send this correspondence on to him for a reply.
I look fwd to his and/or your response."

A small cry in a very large HP wilderness.

Wow, that's quite something. Does this mean that they don't care or that they are eventually going to help?

I tried the drivers on a Win7-32bit and the psc 1200 Paper/Quality works as far as bing able to change the quality.

I don't know if they are going to help, but my mini-campaign is to get them to do so.

Dear 8lives

Does that mean that you can open the Preferences page?

I have just tested my system again. From an open word-processed doc, I click print and the Print command page comes up. My '1200 series' printer is listed and highlighted.  I click on Properties to get to the options which include draft quality etc.

The preferences/options page then flashes up for a nanosecond and then dies.

Are you saying this does NOT happen in your set up?

Or perhaps you are getting to the Preferences via another route? If so, pl tell us what it is.

AA I have used Devices and Printers to change the Preferences.

I have also used Word/2007 to change the Preferences.

Which program/release are you using to access the Preferences?

I don't know about you, AA, but I'm using Word 2010 BETA on Windows 7 32-bit. Please enlighten us with your knowledge...

mr_bean355 can you try another program which is not beta.

LibreOffice writer also works.

Going to the printer's settings via C Panel/Devices and Printers/HP 1200/Adjust print options leads to the same result... an unusable nanosecond display.

I am using W7 Home Premium 32bit and Open Office latest version.

But the fact that I cannot get to the preferences via the C Panel suggests the use of OO is irrelevant.
