I may have missed it if it was somewhere in this thread, but I had this exact problem too.
Wasted over an hour with HP phone support, doing ridiculous, non-related things.
Later, after the call, and after they made us miss our RFP submittal deadline, I went online, and quickly found a different HP forum thread that addressed the issue right away:
1 - you can replace the wireless radio card (as mentioned here)
2 - Similar, to some of the suggestions here was a simple suggestion to reset the network settings from the printer control panel to defaults, (which set the radio to off) and then go back and turn the radio back on from the control panel as well. In my case, just turning it off and on was not working, but using the 'reset to defaults' first, worked.
After that, I used the "USB to wireless" setup steps from the install/setup GUI. But I think it would have worked in other more basic setup ways as well.
Worked like a charm
Did this from all 3 of the laptops that access this printer.

Thanks to all who posted on this forum. I went into my HP programs and found 'Add s Device'. I had wired the printer to a LAN port in my Router and then said to connect through the network. Then I could see in the properties that a different IP address had been assigned than when it was attached wirelessly. So I sent somthing to the printer and it went from offline to online and ready and it printed my document. I was very happy. I didn't have to reinstall the software at all either. I am just lucky that my printer is sitting right next to my Router.
I am still upset that the wireless capability is gone ,as is everyone else who bought this printer !! The next time I buy, it probably won't be HP again. I hope they read all these posts from unsatisfied customers !!

Just a quick update on my wireless radio issue. Today I spoke with Michelle a very nice rep from HP apparently I can get a replacement printer because I am in Canada and they have them here so I don't have to replace the card on the machine I have. She told me that they may not be available in other countries though. It should be delivered by Monday so I will post how it goes after I receive the new one.
Thank you to the forum for the help!

My router is not in the same area as my printer. So I will not be able to connect printer to wireless router. Which is a good fix. However I also print from my iPad and iPhones which will never work again. Tell me HP how am I suppose to use my $250 printer now. Not to mention I've paid over $500 for your print cartridges.
If I pay $37 for 24x7 365 days of 800 tech support can you answer that? It's disgraceful that a company of your size will just slap us consumers right in the face when you can obviously see your products were faulty from the production line. Way to leave a sour taste in all of our mouths.
Take all of the profits you made from the broken 309a photosmart premium printers sold and at least give free customer support so that we can hear first hand from your support team that your company was in the wrong. Or how about be an honest company fess up to your mistakes and at least offer refurbished printers to the customers who truly need the wireless radio to work so that they can use the 309a wireless printer the way it was meant to be used.
